Post Your Best Interview Advice/Tips

This job wants to be filled by jan 1st. Here is the last email I got on Sunday.

I wanted to touch base with you.  Thank you for letting me come and observe last week, you did a great job.  I'm glad you asked and shared about your status on job searching with me.  I want you to know that you are a strong candidate option for us right now and I hope you will be able to continue through this process with us.  As mentioned, I am still interviewing and observing others, and will be doing that potentially the remainder of the month, due to a shorter month with the holidays.  I'll aim to touch base periodically with candidates and feel free to let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for your patience.

Thank you!

That's good right? This was after basically second interview.

When should I email her for an update?

UPDATE:

Spoke with HR again today. She told me to sit tight and that everything is just being taken care of from an administrative standpoint. Interestingly enough, the position was posted online and the day after I applied digitally it was removed. I mentioned this to her and she said they just did not want any other people to apply and not to worry over the next week because "we have our guy." I have to think that is a good sign but I'm still trying to temper my excitement and not get my hopes up. It it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

Can anyone else weigh in on this? My dad seems to think the "we have our guy" line means I have the job all but locked up but why not just came out and say that if it were true?

BUMP/UPDATE:

The position still has not been filled and last night I spoke with my contact in HR. She told me that I am their guy and that she wishes she could give me an offer right now but the position still needs to be approved. The delay has nothing to do with other candidates but rather logistics. I interviewed December, 3rd. She told me that her gut feeling is that it will be formally approved and the necessary people will sign-off on officially creating the position but that there is a still a chance it does not happen for whatever reason. I guess my question to some of you is, is this sort of thing normal? By that I mean, for a company to interview a candidate without the position actually in place or formally created ahead of time? Do you think it is a department head that needs to sign off on the position being filled? I'd assume this is the case as he would likely be in charge of budgeting and things of that nature.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I'd say no. Why put the effort into interviews and everything without having the position available for sure. Makes no sense to me.

Doesn't sound real good, not too bad either.

I have seen this before.  Dept. head has a good idea, gets the "go ahead" from his boss, and so on.  Owner of the company still has to be sold on the idea, but dept. head starts bringing in people to interview to see if he get's any home runs.  If he hits on a good one, he may be able to sell the idea to the owner and get it approved.

I would continue to look if I were in your shoes....that said, if you are smart, you will never stop looking/getting your name out for a new, better job.

In this case it is a professional sports league. Not sure if that changes anything but we are talking huge budgets and the smallest department within the entire league. When interviewing they mentioned expanding the department soon so I'm hoping it gets approved as this is the job I have been building/gearing my skill set and resume towards for a couple years. I was told from the very beginning that getting hired here takes a 'long, long' time.
