Implications of the Rice Decision

Might not be too much, but there are some potential bombshells for the league.  Florio, Gantt and Michael David Smith are running with it right now.

 

Florio points out that in making this decision, the judge may well believe that the NFL had indeed seem the video they swear they never saw (link) and also mentions that Roger Goodell's testimony under oath will become public and be heavily scrutinized.

 

There's also still the ongoing investigation (link) and the question of what effect this ruling will have on it.

 

Word too that Rice and his lawyer had a copy of the video in their possession all along and the NFL - who swears they were moving heaven and earth to try and get a look at it - never asked them for it (link)

 

Naturally the Players Association is pretty happy with all this and what it might mean in future disciplinary hearings (link) and as a minor note, the Ravens apparently helped coach Janay Rice in her 'apology' (link)

 

Seems pretty clear this coming offseason will see some changes in the NFL's executive offices.  Whether or not one of those involves a new commissioner remains to be seen, but the more I read the more I think it's a serious possibility.

Even if he tried to come back now it'd likely just be a repeat of the Adrian Peterson story.

Will the media finally call out Rodger Goodell for being a liar?  I mean seriously, it's just plain and obvious yet the players face more scrutiny than the league chairman?  How is that possible.

Wonder if Major League Baseball can get some benefit out of all this.

 

Maybe a marketing slogan like "Hey we're not so bad.  Our guys only take steroids."

Why is Goodell the bad guy. I actually feel bad for the guy due to the fact every time he put the hammer down, he get shut down. This league is getting out of control, you can do anything and not really get punished. I stated on this board before, if anyone in the REAL WORLD done anything, they would get fired, it would not be questioned. Sad just sad. People are to concerned about a football and not about these men lives. Thats why a lot of them fail, kill themselves and become destructive after they are finished playing.

Because there's a perception that he participated in a cover up.

 

People were outraged that Ray Rice only got a two game suspension for what he did when they saw the video,  The League claimed they hadn't seen it and that it would have been different if they had, but doubt's been cast on that too.

 

Then you have stuff like the family of the woman Brandon Marshall beat up claiming the NFL ignored her and did everything they could to keep the story from getting out.

 

Add that to some of the other unpopular stuff (18 game season, games in London, etc) and you've got lots of fuel on the fire.

I don't know how anyone with any vested interest in the case could say they didn't know.  Both Ray and Janay admitted what happened in court before she dropped charges.  There was another video with a less graphic angle that was out that you could see what happened.

 

Funny though, the public didn't give a rats ass about what happened until the TMZ video with a different angle and a close up was released.

I remember you saying that Goodell was going to fall because of all the media brouhaha. Same thing here, nothing much will happen. Any "firings" will be merely cosmetic.

Goodell will never lose his job over this.

His job is to get you to hate him instead of the owners and to deflect criticism of the league onto him. Just like LA is just a threat to intice cities into building stadium upgrades.

Gooddell is coming off as the bad guy in this because he initially only gave Rice a two game suspension and then changed his mind when the video became public. Had he "put the hammer down" from the very beginning then we most likely aren't having this conversation.

He is no worse than Paul Tagliabue. How can he let Leonard Little play not after killing someone from DUI and he got caught again DUI and was still playing. Thats sick.

Video is the holy grail in this country.

With the right video, you could convince a significant portion of the populace to turn against puppies and kittens.
