Quick Study of First Round Tackles

Mr. Scot

Updated the OP and added some more info...

Lord, the Bears and the Rams really suck at this.  Sad to say the Rams had former Panthers personnel guy Tony Softli running their drafts for a while.  It was Softli who used the #2 pick on Jason Smith.  And that's the guy who ran our college scouting department from 1995 through 2006

19 of the 32 teams started a first round LT on opening day.  Another 3 started a second rounder.  Only 5 started a 7th rounder or UDFA.

Pretty simple really.  The currency for a franchise left tackle is a first round pick.  It does make me leery so many have busted recently however.  I still want to win the division, give our young core playoff experience, and let the chips fall where they may.  In GMan I trust.

See that's the thing.  "First round" doesn't automatically mean "good".

In a perfect system, you'd expect it to, but in reality guys like Jason Smith, Gabe Carimi and Alex Barron are all "first round" tackles.  They're also unfortunately not very good.

Ultimately, ya gotta know what you're doing.  Pretty obvious teams like the Bears and Rams haven't done so well in that area.

I'd love to look at the top offensive line units in the league and break down where they were picked, but someone with more time than me will have to do that.

I'm bored at work, so I have that kind of time.

Well UDFA dang sure doesn't mean good.  We were one of the 5 mentioned above, although 2 were 7th rounders.  So we were actually one of 3 with an UDFA.  And no member of the human race thinks that's working for us.

I don't know what we gotta do, but we gotta do something.

So what can we learn here (aside from the fact that I've got a lot of time on my hands today)?

Nothing to learn except that just because you're a 1st Round pick doesn't mean you're going to automatically be better than every non-1st-round guy, but everybody knows that already. However, just like 5-star recruits out of high school have better chances of panning out than 4-star recruits, and 4-star recruits have a better chance at panning out than 3-star recruits, it's the same with the draft. Also, it's pointless to look at OTs by themselves without comparing them to other positions. If I remember right, in all the studies posted here last year, a 1st R OT had the highest chance of panning out whereas 1st R WRs had the lowest chance of panning out. At the end of the day you just need to keep an open mind and not cling to any certain prospect or position you want and keep your mind open to what is best for the Panthers. The draft stock of prospects will rise and fall as more and more people turn their focus to film study, and there is no sure thing

    • The SEC were not having GT upset Georgia at home. Horrendously corrupt officiating in this game - the non-PI on 4th down and the non-targeting call on the King fumble. Good lord.
    • I like how they were about to punt the ball right before the two minute warning before being like... oh fug, this'll be too obvious we gotta try a FG then ole boy skulls one that never got more than about 12 feet off the ground. LOL!
