Among misinformed fans and media, yes.

Among decision makers of other teams, no. Somebody quoted an article awhile back that stated other teams tried to get deals done before us because our team would screw up the market for free agents. We were the laughing stock of the league way before DG got here.

i read that article too.  i think it even discussed how shocked charles johnson and his agent were by the offer that he plunked down.

a buh buh buh JR is a greedy miser and we have a cheap front office!

Lockout was in 2011, guys.

Jerry started prepping for the lockout in 2008 by all accounts. That he didn't lay anyone off during the lockout just means that we were already so lean after the 2009 layoffs that there was no one left to let go.

Any way you slice it, Richardson let the same number of employees go as most others did, just a couple of years sooner. Should we really salute Jerry Richardson for laying off employees in 2009 as opposed to 2011?

And you can prove this, or you're just speculating on it?

Keep in mind when you answer that the lockout wasn't a planned event and didn't absolutely have to happen.

Whch is why you would cull your roster in 2010, and leave a lame duck coach in charge in 2010 to save money towards a possible strike season in 2011.

Discounted roster, no Head Coach to pay during a strike.

Pretty simple.

The lockout reference was talking about non-football staff, not players and coaches.

I love how all these people seem to have opinions that have never met the man. I have met him and know a number of people that are on a first name basis with Big Cat. In my opinion he certainly cares about winning. He wants to win the right way though. He's not perfect but he's a good guy with a strong moral compass.

Great, we've met him on several occasions as well and while I can honestly say I don't know where he is with the whole winning and losing thing, I don't think W-L is part of the good owner, bad owner equation.

"He wants to win the right way though. He's not perfect but he's a good guy with a strong moral compass." And this is what gets in the way of putting a quality product on the field. I think Jerry Richardson considers his football team a success when nobody gets thrown in jail, all of his players are choirboys and rather than bringing in talent, he wants character. Sorry, but character won't win you football games.

Winning teams play to win, play with a chip on their shoulder and play with attitude. None of these traits have ever been mentioned in the same sentence as the Carolina Panthers save for the 2003 season. One season.... since 1995. Once.

"... the lockout wasn't a planned event and didn't absolutely have to happen."

Can you explain how you arrived at this conclusion? Everyone and their brother knew there was going to be a lockout, it most certainly was planned and Jerry Richardson was the ringleader among the owners.

The lockout was formally announced to begin March 12. It was planned well enough in advance that the draft was allowed to take place as originally scheduled with special provisions regarding contract negotiations with the draftees.

How can you say it wasn't planned?

The lockout occurred because they failed to reach agreement on the CBA.  It was even postponed (more than once as I recall) to give them additional time to reach an agreement.

Both sides were trying to prevent it from happening.  They failed.

They failed to reach an agreement on the CBA a full year before the existing one expired. That as no secret to anyone. They couldn't even negotiate an extension. This was in 2010, a full 9 months before the current CBA expired in March 2011. Hell, the owners stopped showing up to negotiations in late 2010, while the players union continued to meet with Goodell.

The owners knew they were going to lockout in 2010, if not sooner. It's not as though either side was fighting hard to get a new CBA, but the owners were the ones who walked away from the table.

So plenty of facts and rational reasons coming from the anti-Richardson/losing crowd. Seems like the pro-Richardson arguments are he is a good guy, brought a team to the carolinas (even though taxes, PSLs and demand did) and 'you're wrong'.

Does anyone actually have a legitimate, football/team-success related reason to like him as an owner? One preferably backed by examples of JRs actions?

Richardson obviously believed the lock out coming to a fruition was a real possibility.

He positioned himself to be in the best position to not bleed cash.

This was done with little regard to the product on the field the fans in Carolina during the 2010 season were subjected to imho.

Other owners prepared to win in 2010 without regard to a possible 2011 lockout and consequently, were successful.

    • Start with Bryce, this is like his rookie year. The 1st 2 games proved her was wired wrong and it looks like (we hope) he needed a time out to reset and be the player that was drafted. He's still about a year or more away from being a top 15 QB, if the Panther give him another playmaker or 2 (a top WR and a decent TE) and maintain that line. Canales deserves credit as playing that card correctly to motivate (or refocus) his QB for one last shot to decide his and the Panthers immediate future. As a Panther fans we should hope he keeps improving as we invested so much to get him. CJ Stroud will never have a season like he had, even if he stays a top 10 QB. He's got great character so I'm rooting for Bryce to continue on his positive journey. Canales is playing the week to week thing with bryce perfectly. Nothings guaranteed, earn it weekly which builds consistency and consistency is greatness.  Keep the O-line. They've got to extend Brady C, along with Mayes that have a real good 7. Great job Morgan starting with the big guys upfront.  I really hope they draft a DE or OLB in the 1st round. Getting Brown back with A Robinson and what DJ has shown that we can have a decent D-line. Need a CB in the early rounds/ or a time FA to go with Horn.  The future as to next year being good enough to challenge for the division is within reach. Just show progress (win or lose) every week. Kudos to Dan Morgan. Plays GM like a LB. Tackle the problem and move on, don't just hope it works out. Find guys with your playing mentality and work closely with your HC to share a vision. Teamwork starts at the top and flows down.
    • Since we play the Panthers today and tmrw, we will have one gigantic double thread for both games. Today’s game is at 3pm and tmrw is 7pm.    After beating the Rangers and sending the those yankee bastards back to Cary, we get the Champs in the house.  Clean up the defense, no more lazy clears, and score baby score.  LFG CANES!
