Picking 8th vs 21st

Happy Panther

Recommended Posts

Realistically if you pick top ten it's because your front office sucks. It shouldn't be that surprising that top 10 picks often fizzle out compared to bottom 10 picks where perennial playoff teams with solid talent evaluators pick.

The main reason I don't want to win the division is because it makes it more likely that limp dick Ron stays another year.

Being a Panther fan has taught me to "Play the hand dealt".

I cannot pull for the Panthers to lose. No use trying, I can't do it. I will continue to do the same thing I've always done. I will get excited about the next game, and when it's over, I'm Mad as crap or Happy as Hell. If we don't win, it takes me a day or two to get over it, and then I start thinking about the next game.

As far as supporting the Coaching Staff and front office, I tend to be the same way. I think JR is an awesome owner, and I'm grateful he brought the Panthers to my hometown. I've never gotten too caught up with the selection process for coaches. RR is the man right now, and I can't help but want him to do well. If it was left up to me, we would probably still have Capers running the show. :D I would not be upset if our OC was replaced, but if he isn't, I'm still going to keep pulling for him to get it right. Make Cam successful, that's what I want.

Every year I'm hoping the Panthers win the Super Bowl, and when we don't, I spend a lot of time trying to decide who we should draft and why. What I've learned over the years is that if I was making the picks, the Panthers would be in a world of trouble. Examples - I wasn't fully sold on Cam at 1, and I could not have been more wrong. I also wanted DT when Luke was picked, and he's turned out to be a world class Beast. (My two favorite players)

This season, I'm still holding out hope that we win out and make a deep run. Until we are mathematically eliminated, I can't help it. Once the season is over, I'm going to hope I'm wrong again, and our FO hits a homerun with our first pick. (Regardless of which pick it is) Right now, I still hope it's the 32nd pick.

Go Panthers!

Definitely an interesting discussion, nice job HP.

I would think the main difference between 8 & 21 is that at 8 you can generally get a great prospect at whatever position is your greatest need whereas at 21 you'd be better served taking BPA. You can still get top notch talent anywhere in Rnd1...

Agree and my view is that a top 10 player is potentially elite while a late first rounder is potentially great.

Switching in a perfect player for a great player is fun but isn't going to turn around a franchise.

I hear ya.  I wont be terribly upset if we made the playofffs, because it probably doesnt make a huge difference in the draft.  That being said, if missing the playoffs leads to Dave G firing Rivera and bringing in an offensive minded NFL caliber coach, then lets miss the playoffs, because it will be in our best interest as an organization long term and might be what finally brings home the Lombardi.

So keeping RIVERA, and firing GMan, may be better for the team long term interest and finally snagging that Lombardi??

Semaj, I usually agree with a lot of your post (I think). But with this one, I have to wonder. :startle: Lol

For all the folks who want to tank the season to secure a high draft pick I thought I would look at the difference between 8th where we are now and 21st where we could pick if we somehow win the division. I was surprised at the results:

2007

8th - DE Jamaal Anderson (out of the league)

21st - S Reggie Nelson (still in league may have shot someone)

2008

8th - DE Derrick Harvey (out of the league)

21st - OT Sam Baker (often injured still active)

2009

8th - OT Eugene Monroe (solid OT)

21st - C Alex Mack (pro bowler)

2010

8th - LB Rolando McCain (released by the Raiders for being to crazy, retired edit: unretired and playing well)

21st - TE Jermaine Gresham (pro bowler)

2011

8th - QB Jake Locker (above average QB watching Mettenberger play)

21st - DE Phil Taylor (rookie standout declined from there)

2012

8th - QB Ryan Tannehill (good QB with further potential)

21st - DE Chandler Jones (starting DE/LB for New England with 22 career sacks)

2013

8th - WR Tavon Austin (600 yards in 2 seasons; he's no Lafell)

21st - TE Tyler Eifert (Ok rookie season now on IR)

2014

8th - CB Justin Gilbert (currently sitting the bench but future potential)

21st - S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (starting S in Green Bay)

Yeah, teams like the patriots, packers, Bengals and other playoff teams have been drafting low for years but still field a damn good team year in and year out.

Somehow no matter where we've picked the last 4 drafts we've managed to get our guy. I don't really care where we draft

This. We've nailed first rounders like it's nobodies business. I trust the GM and the talent evaluation process we have. We should be good at either spot but I'm happier picking lower if that means we won the south.

I think the OP shows that you can still find good if not outstanding talent in the lower portion of the draft. Hell we chose 28th and have a player that is definitely in the conversation for OROY. What more can you ask for. I think Gettleman will nail the first round. Though many may not like it. I know by the time the season starts everyone will be happy.
