Josh Norman: Munnerlyn Never Helped Me

2013 Grade: +10.1

2013 Snaps: 992

Captain Munnerlyn is another cornerback who came into his own in 2013. He was always a solid special teams contributor, but his play at corner finally lived up to expectations this year. His overall grade is a culmination of his balanced play. He graded positively in all phases; penalties, coverage and in run support. Despite being a little undersized, his +4.8 run grade tops anyone in this Top 10.

With Carolina being pretty close to being capped out and having the task of trying to resign Greg Hardy, Munnerlyn could be playing for a new team next year.

if we're doing the PFF thing now munnerlyn is grading out at a +2.8 in minnesota this season with all but three of his starts coming on the outside which is a pretty significant drop off from 2013 where he was also playing more nickel per the same accounting system.

norman is giving up a passer rating of 58 this season starting on the outside full time whereas munnerlyn is giving up 105.1.  munnerlyn gave up 85.6 in 2013 again when he was playing more nickel than this season.

he wouldn't be the best DB on this team.  at best it's a wash and even then you have to consider that you're comparing a full time outside CB to a player who's gotten starts at nickel and went up against slot receivers.

That's fair, but when they were both on the same team with the same cast of players around them, it was 41 on the field and not 24.

Is it not possible that josh Norman improved? Last yeas his second year in the league. That logic is completely flawed. Tyler Brayton started every game over Charles Johnson when they were both here. No one would argue Brayton was the better player.

I'll take outside Norman vs. a nickelback any day of the week. Munnerlyn was a hack. Was always a liability in coverage. At least Norman has size and the competitive fire to get in on the fight. Captain was always out of position.

Captain was a top 5ish nickel CB. He sucked when asked to be something he wasn't.

People are putting too much stock in 3 games. Norman has been a dumpster fire for years here. Past 3 games don't erase all that yet.

Yeah, he has potential.....potential and Captain hate don't make him a better player yet

Josh Norman is following the same trajectory as Greg Hardy. I think there's a good chance he could be a Pro Bowl cornerback next season, but I think it's entirely possible he'll do something so knuckleheaded that resigning him to a contract he'll believe he's worth will be difficult at best and foolish at worst.

I've had numerous players sign autographs, and they stayed for ages to sign as many as they had to. But, you also can look at it this way... As you mentioned in the post above this one, "They both have egos". Well, signing autographs for "hundreds of fans" doesn't feed that ego, does it?

I got an autograph and a picture taken with Mike Vrabel once.

Despite that, no doubt whatsoever in my mind that he's still a colossal prick.

That doesn't really help the argument much when you know that the guy who made that decision is the same guy who said Byron Bell was our best option at left tackle.

steve smith of the defense

Rivera called him that specifically if I remember right.  Maybe it was more true than we know.

If we're being honest here, we don't know what these players are truly like.  We think we do based on interviews, behavior, glimpses we see in news stories and brief personal encounters.

It's what we have to go on, but it's not really authoritative.  We kind of have to accept that we don't really know them that well.

Maybe the story's true.  Who can say?

that is an insult to Greg Hardy

3 games and suddenly people are forgetting just how bad and costly Norman has been here in his short career.

Norman has the highs and lows of a Sherrod Martin at this stage.
