I need a new TV

Recommended Posts

Ok, finally decided that it's time to replace my old TV, i've had it for about 6-7 years now so it's due to be replaced still works fine just really dated compared to what is out now. and I want a bigger screen!!!

I would like to replace is with something near 50" for around $600. I could spend more, but whatever I dont spend on TV adds to my Tattoo fund

any suggestions??

I'm a plasma fan. Get one before they are gone! While LCD based tvs have gotten much better, they can't be at plasma for the ability to produce black.

OLED tvs are great but expensive and finicky. They are having burn in issues.

Good luck! Black Friday is almost here and the deals can be good!

I would not get a Vizio. I have had countless die.

Projector will give you the absolute best picture but they are heavy, bulky and lamps need to be replaced.

Plasmas, as said, will give you the best color. But the picture can be burned in the screen if left on a certain way. And, they are expensive.

LEDs are new, more expensive, and so some of the kinks are getting worked out.

Honestly your best bet, for your price range in my opinion is just a good old LCD 1080p, 120hz. I highly recommend Sony TVs, I have owned all major brands and the Sony's seem to have the best all around performance in this category for price. I will never buy anything but Sony Tvs. Second place for me goes to Samsung. I find they don't last quite as long as Sony though.

$600 should be able to get you a decent size Sony Bravia. Of course it might be smaller than what you could afford going with other brands (Vizio, LG, Phillips) but the quality and picture are more important, though it's worth dishing out more for a bigger Sony.

Good Luck.

Don't worry too much about brand as every brand has their duds. Focus more on specs. If it's a LED/LCD then make sure it's 120hz. Don't worry about smart features since you can buy adapters which are way smoother than built-in apps. A fire stick at Amazon is only $24.99 and you'll save a ton getting a TV without smart features.

DLP/Projector have high maintenance costs. Plasma uses more energy than LED/LCD but it's neither really uses much. Plasma has a shorter lifespan than LED/LCD but both last longer than you'll likely want to keep them (IIRC Plasma has a life of 100,000 watching hours).

Samsung has the best reputation. Panasonic has a lot of great valued plasmas on the market. The main specs you want to see are 1080p/120hz/24p. Plasmas doesn't have the hz issues and has great contrast ratios. Plasma tvs can be really heavy so if you move a lot (military, etc) you don't want one.

Ultimately I'd go find a great value on a LED/LCD. I hate how heavy my plasma TV is.

Vizio actually has the reputation for best bang for the buck and longest lifespan.

Just be careful of the discount brands. Vizio has really made some quality tvs. I'm talking about the ones with funny names. Those are real hit and miss. Great for a first tv, but stick to the bigger, more recognizable brands and you'll be good.

65" for 648 you say... Black Friday only? I'm working night shift so I won't be making it for that.

I posted in another thread regarding BF but will repeat to a certain extent.  I was in your shoes last year and decided to wait for Black Friday. Many of the offers are TVs configured with lesser accessories so the price is lower but the resolution/screen size is equivalent.  I bought a 60 inch Samsung for about 350 less than an equivalent TV with a few more inputs.  Mounted it myself and installed a sound bar of my living room.  I bought it from Best Buy on the Saturday or Sunday after Thanksgiving and did not wait in line.  There are deals to be had without waiting in line.  Research in terms of inputs and read some customer reviews to get acquainted.

For the most part TV technology (HD) is a commodity now and I think the nuances differentiate the product.  Side by side you might like one over the other but when you get it home and put it in your living room you cant compare and contrast. On top of that I do think that the box stores amp up the color based on the price of the TV so it looks more vivid on the display floor but that is just a passage in my manifesto so take it as you will.  All that said, there are probably deals to be had but I would use the Google to perform some due diligence.  It might pay off in the long run.

Good luck and happy hunting.

    • This has been every game this year. We get blown out and have to come back.
    • The really frustrating thing is that Hubert knows why he has to do scheme wise with this roster he just doesn't want to do it until we're down big and he's forced to do it then we come roaring back. Just do the damn thing from the get go. fug how you want to play ideally. Good coaches adapt their schemes to the talent they have. We have a lot of talent we just lack any post presence on either end of the court. Press and get after it from the opening tipoff and stop waiting until you're down 20 to do it.
