What do you need to run a West Coast offense?

so you do in fact like a WCO,

Kubiak is WCO,btw,

Kubiak runs a version of the WCO, but it focuses a lot more on setting up the run game than a traditional WCO does. I think I should have been more specific. Cam doesn't need to be in a Bill Walsh style WCO (passing 80% of the time), which is the predominate one.

That would work well. He uses stretch zone running to set up play action passing. It's done wonders for Flacco.

I understand 'stretch zone' is what they're running in Jacksonville too.  I honestly wasn't aware Kubiak was using it, though I assumed zone blocking based on his scheme.

And although we haven't really discussed it, a zone scheme might go a long way toward fixing our vulnerability to 3-4 defenses.

That, and you can basically plug in any RB and have them be effective. Pick a hole, make your cut and hit it hard.

That was one of the hallmarks of Shanahan's Bronco teams.  Stick any runningback in there and watch him run for a thousand yards.

Likewise, Baltimore hasn't missed a beat in the run game even with Ray Rice sent packing.  That'd be handy for us too since we need to get cheaper in the backfield.

A couple of years ago I'd have said DeAngelo would be better in that scheme than Stewart because he was a better cutback runner.  These days I don't know that anymore.  I could see Stewart being a Roger Craig type of back (minus the high knee running).  Might not be ideal, but he could work.

I will say this though: Having watched him this year, I have zero desire to see Byron Bell in a zone blocking scheme.  He looks confused enough already (likely the same verdict for Nate Chandler).

If we have Bell and Chandler as our starters again next year we are in deep trouble.

Olsen would be okay along wth Kalil and a young Dwill

The rest of our offense, especially Cam, would absolutely suck at the WCO.

Philly is not a starter, but I agree that he would be good in the WCO although I am not sure he could hold up physically

West Coast starts with the QB and the offensive coordinator. Obviously our OC is a joke now and as far as the QB you obviously have to be able to complete the quick, short routs. It pained me to watch punks to Jeff Garcia come in here with Philly and Tampa and consistently kick our ass. We have so much trouble defending this type of offense I think partly because our defense doesn't see any West Coast-type plays in practice. Truth is I don't think our quarterback has the two qualities necessary to run this type of offense. First thing you need is extremely quick recognition. You need to recognize your opportunities before the ball is snapped and have the mechanics to get the ball out quick. The other thing you need is short yardage accuracy. Cam Newton could throw the ball through a tire at 30 yards down the field and if the tire is 8 yards in front of him, he'll still throw the ball 30 yards down the field. I get the skill set he has and it's pretty great... it's frustrating to see these glaring weaknesses and it means West Coast doesn't seem to be an option right now.

Whoa, 80% of the time?

There is a lot of confuisn on what the WCO is.

Let's look at Walsh's 49ers in 1981 when they won their 1st Super Bowl, they ran the ball more than they passed it.

1984, another Lombardi, the same.

Their last Super Bowl under Walsh in 1988, same thing. More rushing attempts than passing attempts.

1989 under Seifert, same. Ya'll get the idea.

Now the League is much more passer friendly than it used to be but a WCO doesn't mean we're going pass happy.

Even today last year's Andy Reid Chiefs pass/run at about 55/45% ratio.

Hell, even Chuckie the year the Bucs won the SB passed/ran about 57/43% ratio.

A full two year(if you are very lucky), that's coming form many pros. That system is beyond hard and most say its takes much longer. Two years is if you get your players, so no thanks...... unless you want to trade cam and others......... to bring in a alex smith like QB and others......

Lastly believe it or not, running the ball is the key to a WC system. They want you to think is all about passing, its not. Its about balance and keeping Ds honest and confused. if you don't don't stop the run, a smart WC OC will run the ball every play.
