Head Coach Prospect - Arizona DC Todd Bowles

Some of Bowles coaching history and former colleagues...

Philadelphia Eagles DB Coach, Defensive Coordinator (2012)

(started the year coaching DBs, became DC after Juan Castillo was fired)

- Offensive Coordinator Marty Mornhinweg (currently the Jets OC, could be looking for work next year)

- Offensive Line Coach Howard Mudd (elite OL coach, but 72 years old and officially retired)

- Offensive Quality Control Coach Matt Nagy (currently Chiefs QB Coach, too inexperienced to be an OC)

- Special Teams Coach Bobby April (one of the best in the business; currently with the Raiders, quite possibly unemployed next year)

I'd love it if he could somehow pluck Castillo from the Chiefs but that's highly unlikely.

Miami Dolphins DB Coach, Assistant Head Coach (2008-2011)

(was interim head coach for the last 3 games of 2011)

- Head Coach Tony Sparano (the guy Bowles replaced for the final 3 games of the 2011 season; currently interim head coach of the near winless Oakland Raiders, probably looking for work next year)

- Offensive Coordinator Dan Henning (not much I'd need to tell you here; currently retired)

- Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll (replaced Henning as OC in 2011; currently TE coach for the Patriots; history as an OC has been lackluster but a good position coach)

- Quarterback Coach David Lee (works for Mornhinweg in New York as QB Coach; majority of experience is at college level)

- Receiver Coach / Quarterbacks Coach Karl Dorrell (coached receivers from 2008 to 2010, QBs in 2011; currently OC and QB coach at Vanderbilt University, has a good reputation but has been passed over a lot)

- Offensive Line Coach Mike Maser (fired by Panthers, fired by Dolphins; currently not coaching at college or pro level)

- Tight End Coach Dan Campbell (still with the Dolphins in the same role; Bowles also knew him as a player for the Cowboys)

- Defensive Coordinator Paul Pasqualoni (has been a head coach for two NCAA schools, mostly a position coach at the pro level; currently Dl Coach of the Bears; possibly unemployed next year)

- Pass Rush Coach Bryan Cox (long history of being a malcontent; currently Falcons DL coach)

- Linebacker Coach Bill Sheridan (currently Lions LB Coach; good history as a position coach but had a much maligned one year stint as defensive coordinator for the Giants)

Sparano is likely the most interesting name on this list.

Dallas Cowboys Secondary Coach (2005-2007)

- Head Coach Wade Phillips (2007; not officially retired, but not coaching; was last seen as interim Head Coach of the Texans in 2013)

- Head Coach Bill Parcells (2005-2006; retired as both a Head Coach and an executive)

- Offensive Coordinator Sean Payton (2005 only; unknown if he'd be interested in anyone from Payton's staff)

- Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett (currently Cowboys Head Coach)

- Quarterback Coach Wade Wilson (top flight QB Coach who'd likely be difficult to pry away from Dallas)

- Defensive Coordinator Mike Zimmer (currently Vikings Head Coach)

- Linebacker Coach Gary Gibbs (has had stints as a DC, but not great ones; now back to being an LB Coach in Kansas City)

Details on the Cowboys staff for this period are hard to find.

Cleveland Browns Nickel Package Coach / Secondary Coach (2001-2004)

- Head Coach Butch Davis (currently not coaching; most recent job was as an adviser to the tampa bay Buccaneers)

- Wide Receiver Coach / Offensive Coordinator / Interim Head Coach Terry Robiskie (longtime NFL assistant who narrowly missed coaching in Washington when Bowles was a player)

- Offensive Coordinator Rob Chudzinski (2004 OC, currently an offensive consultant with the Colts; no need to say much here)

- Defensive Coordinator Dave Campo (was Cowboys head coach for three years and had an awful record; was last seen coaching with the University of Kansas)

- Secondary Coach Chuck Pagano (was Bowles' boss for all four years in Cleveland; now Colts Head Coach)

Anyone want Chud back?

Defensive Backs Coach, New York Jets (2000)

- Offensive Line Coach Bill Muir (well respected OL Coach, currently retired)

- Offensive Coordinator Dan Henning (yep, here too)

- Offensive Assistant Todd Haley (could conceivably come available if Ben Roethlisberger gets his way; and Ben's not one to take 'no' for an answer)

- Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan (might pop free if the Falcons can Mike Smith, or use Nolan as a scapegoat; well known DC)

- Special teams Coach Ken Whisenhunt (not likely to lose his job despite Titans dismal reccord)

Bowles narrowly missed working with Bill Belichick when Belichick was officially hired as Jets Coach in 2000, after which - in a bizarre sequence of events - Belichick abruptly resigned and joined the Patriots instead.

Also worth noting that Colts DC Greg Manusky and Bowles were teammates in Washington during their playing days.

Looking at his history (and factoring in likely availability) I'd find a staff with OC Tony Sparano, QB Coach Marty Mornhinweg, Special Teams Coach Bobby April pretty intriguing.  Terry Robiskie would be a good WR Coach if available (not as likely).

For a DC, Bowles could conceivably tap old boss Mike Nolan (if the Falcons part ways, which seems possible even if Mike Smith is retained).  Bowles might even give Wade Phillips another shot, but Bowles and Phillips didn't work together all that long.

As far as old coaches with whom he worked longer, well....there's Butch Davis.  Laugh if you will, but Davis had a pretty successful run as defensive coordinator for the Cowboys.

One other note of interest: Bowles was actually working as a personnel intern with the Green Bay Packers from 1995 to 1996.  Fans remember 1996 as the year they defeated the Panthers in the NFC Championship.

On staff with the Pack at that time, QB Coaches Steve Mariucci and Marty Mornhinweg, TE Coach Andy Reid and DC Fritz Shurmur (Pat Shurmur's uncle, now deceased).  Current Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie was also onboard in the pro personnel department.

On the Panthers player roster at that time, former Panthers WR Don Beebe, later Panthers DB Doug Evans, later (temporary) Panthers DE Reggie White, later Panthers Scout Bucky Brooks, and a veteran safety by the name of Eugene Robinson.

Bowles is a great defensive mind. If he does become our coach, I just hope he brings in someone who knows OFFENSE.

Well, he goes way back with Jets OC Marty Mornhinweg, and he could be looking for work next year.  And despite being a laughably bad head coach, Mornhinweg is a good offensive mind.

I probably like his old boss Tony Sparano better as an OC option though, with Mornhinweg as a QB coach.

That, and the Rooney rule.

I'd say it has a lot more to do with the fact that he consistently ran units that were among the best in the league  (had the number one defense on more than one occasion).

For whatever you think of Rivera as a head coach, his record as a defensive coordinator was solid.
