A cap expert gives a little analysis on our RBs among other things (via Person)

Joe Person's latest features CBS.com's Joel Corry, a real cap expert, who offers a little insight on why we are not going to get rid of Jonathan Stewart (which is great in my book). He also is kind of saying that Deangelo Williams may still be here, but if we do decide to get rid of him it will be as a June 1 cut.

If the Panthers cut Williams before June 1 it would be a wash, with no salary-cap savings. If he’s designated as a post-June 1 cut, the team can spread out the proration over the next two years, with a cap savings of about $2.3 million in 2015.

“They accounted for him being on the roster in 2015 when he took the pay cut a few years ago,” Corry said. “It’s not really worth their while unless it’s a post-June 1 cut.”

Cutting Stewart would be even more cost-prohibitive.

Stewart, who has run well this season after two injury-plagued years, has a cap figure of $8.3 million in 2015, when more than half of his $4.25 million base salary is guaranteed.

“The one thing you can’t do – and I’m sure a lot of people would want them to – is you can’t touch Jonathan Stewart in 2015,” Corry said. “You can’t really touch his deal until 2016.”

That’s the year Gettleman has said the Panthers should be in better cap shape, as they get out from under the contracts of Johnson, Williams and, possibly, Stewart. All of those extensions were signed under former general manager Marty Hurney.

And then there’s Cam

Corry estimates the Panthers will have about $15 million in cap space next year, a figure that assumes the team does not get a long-term deal done with Newton. The Panthers picked up their club option on Newton, who will make a guaranteed $14.66 million in 2015 unless the two sides reach a long-term agreement.

“Because you’re not in a great cap situation, there’s more pressure on Carolina than Cam to do a deal,” Corry said. “He could (get) his $14.6 (million) and just bide his time.”

Other than that, Person also discusses balancing winning this year and evaluating for the future.  Regardless of whether or not we win or lose, I am personally not going to get too upset either way. I just don't want to see Cam get killed or get a permanent, constant case of hearing footsteps during this unsettled transition.  Though no one in the FO has come out and said that we are in a semi rebuilding mode, that's what it smells like.  Continuing to clear the books, as well as paying Cam  may bring some more pain.  Gettleman needs to be on his game when it comes to the draft and free agency this coming year.

No one has said word for word we were in a semi-rebuilding year, but ever since Gettleman has gotten here he has discussed the cap situation as though he's listening to nails on a chalkboard while making sure to do all he can to not publicly bash Hurney. His postseason press conference from last year was very telling, since he obviously knew what the plan was going forward.

It's not like Gettleman wanted to completely bottom out this season. It's just what he has known he had to do all along in order to set up this franchise in a much better position going forward.

His personality is a little too caustic and that makes him an easy target, but it's not like he is putting this product on the field to tank. It's what he has to work with, and with the lack of funds for legitimate depth and needs, one player lost of the 70+ on the roster (Greg Hardy) can ruin a whole season.

I really, really hope Dave cuts DeAngelo this coming summer. Even if it will cost some money, he needs to be gone. He just isn't good anymore. Stewart is here for a few more years, and he's still only 27 and has very minimal wear on his body. I feel as long as D-Will is here Rivera, or whoever, is gonna use him and it's gonna hurt the team. His carries take away from Stewart, who has honestly looked good and has ran hard as hell this year. What's the point in splitting Stewart's carries? Saving his legs? Trying to keep him healthy? Who cares, he gets hurt anyway. He's 10x better than D-Will right now. Might as well get your money worth out of him. Cut D-Will and run Stewart's ass into the ground. No more of this committee RB poo. His health concerns are overblown. He had some very nasty ankle injuries. He's over that now and is running great. He'd be a Pro Bowler in Dallas or somewhere else with a real OL.

Deangelo is a June 1 casualty and he absolutely knows it already.

I can't imagine how salty he will be in OTA's.

Oh wow. Has he hinted at it? I am a little bias toward Dwill. I still want him on our team. He is one of my fav players. By reading the post, it doesn't seem like cutting him will save that much money so I dont understand. I'm not a cap or money guy, I just leave that up to the front office.

Those three contracts in a nutshell illustrate why you people calling for DGs job are at best misguided and at worst..complete morons.

Dave Gettlemen took this job and told JR that bc of Hurney it would probably take 4 years before the roster was assembled. Last year was purely an outlier BECAUSE Gettlemen is such a good talent evaluator. The offensive line couldn't have been any better this year because the guys he picked off the waiver wire last year turned into stars and he had to replace them (Ginn, Mitchell in particular). You also lose Gross who was one of the best Panthers of all time.

But good insight about the RBs...saving some DWill cap room will be nice.

    • So this has been one of my biggest concerns with Canales and it's the downside of having some young offensive guy who doesn't have full staff control. like what is the org chart for this decision?  With canales, who does he know or has worked with that he can tap? He hasn't been in Seattle in 2 seasons and all those guys are gone anyway. He wasn't even that high up on the org chart in Seattle so it's unclear who he would have regularly interacted with. QB coaches generally aren't going to be in the split squad meetings, at least not regularly. Just glancing at the coaching staff, Clint Hurt jumps out. He was DC in 2022 and is currently the dline coach in Philadelphia, but that team is the brainchild of roseman and i'd be very hesitant to bring in someone who was allowed to walk from seattle and would be having a SUBSTANTIAL decline in talent here in Carolina. With Tampa, that defense is a shambles and fans want Bowles out. It's a very top heavy coaching staff too; Bowles is very involved so there isn't some bright up and comer, from what Bucs fans elsewhere have said. Someone from the Bills maybe? Morgan was last there in 2020. Who could he call? No one established is going to take that position for a few reasons. There very little talent on that side of the ball, so you're not getting the rockstar mercenaries to come here. They're probably going to struggle to bring in some hot up and comer, since anyone with ambition is going to see how Tepper handled evero's request to interview for other positions and not want to deal with that. That's a problem the team has created on its own and I don't know how to fix it until they have someone leave for a promotion, which is going to be difficult with how dogshit this franchise is. And then, any agent is going to tell their client that the Panthers let the whole defense eat poo heading into 2023 just to "give bryce weapons." they let two starters walk and traded away a third. who would want to come in to this? how are you going to build/retain talent? There's only a few logical possibilities from my perspective 1. Someone out of nowhere who just crushes their interview 2. Someone from a good defense promoted WAY earlier than they should be and you just hope for the best 3. Extend Evero. I know a lot of people hate this but I think it's going to be the best option. This is the problem with Canales as coach. I don't want to go into what I think about the offense in this post, today or as it projects, but it's just not going to be easy for him to assemble a staff, if he even has the power to do so. For all we know Morgan is handling all defensive positions and hires. unclear org charts are a hallmark sign of a poorly run organization. I dunno. i think it's lowkey the biggest problem on the team, even moreso than the QB position.
