Offensive Focus Next Year?

If we really want to build this team into a competitive one year in and year out, we have to keep going BPA.  That's the only way to do it because picks aren't even guaranteed to work out in the first place, even if it's a blue chip guy.  I feel pretty good about Gettleman's scouting though.  Along with some good free agents signed once money clears up our team will be built pretty well.  I care more about cleaning out the coaching staff than Offense vs. Defense picks in the draft.

We are going to go BPA.  I mostly agree with the philosophy in the first three rounds, but I think that during the later rounds that need should be given a little more eight than in the first three, though in these rounds BPA should still be given at least 45 percent of the weight (another 45 to need and 10 percent arguments to persuade here or there, if you understand what I am saying).  Consequently, the later rounds are where championship teams are built.

All that being said, who the hell knows what G-man is gonna do? If he sticks with his BPA philosophy 'til-it-hurts, then if all defensive players are the BPA, then I guess that's what we'll get. Likewise, if all offensive players are the BPA, then I suppose that's what we'll get.  It just seems like he needs to modify his philosophy so that it's not so rigid or dogmatic.

And I have this sinking feeling we haven't hit bottom yet. It's coming.

I feel we may be another year away from righting this presently sinking ship. It all has to start with an excellent  2015 NFL Draft and good free agent signings. I still have faith that Gettleman will have us heading and pointed  in the right direction, once we get rid of some more of the salary cap hell,we are currently in.

Daves done great at drafting thus far, I'm still in the (within reason)BPA group. You reach for OL and they don't plan out, then what? You're in a worst shot than before, take the better player. But if there's a DL rated 85 on your scale and a OLman rated 81 and nothing else, given the current needs take the OL. It doesn't help to draft all offense, when you also need 2-3 saftys, 2-3 CBs, DE(if cj&hardy are gone), and punt returner/SP teamers. Even cole & edwards are FAs at seasons end, so drafting a DT could be a huge need as well.

The BPA vs Need argument is a bit overblown. The majority of the teams in the league fall somewhere in the middle.

Look at last year's draft:

We drafted a

Wide receiver - need

Guard - need

Cornerback - need

Safety - need

DE - on the surface seemed like a BPA but with Hardy on a one year deal and CJ getting older and more expensive you could make the argument that is a need

RB - this could be viewed as BPA but considering it was towards the end of the 6th round some teams start looking for situational players or special teamers. They might have felt he had a better chance to make the roster because of special teams then any OT. With that being said it would not have hurt my feelings if we hadn't took a chance on a tackle at this spot. Either way the chance of finding a starter this late in the draft is actually quite small.

For all we know the team could have had a QB,RB or center rated higher then some of the players we did pick so while they claim BPA in reality they do consider need to a degree.

BPA is a philosophy that a lot of GMs preach but in reality positional value and need factor in. The difference among teams is how much they factor it in.

Looking at next year you could make the argument that our needs are:

LT

RT

Safety

Cornerback

DE: If Hardy is gone and CJ is a cap casualty this actually moves up the list to me. You could make the argument that an improved pass rush will help our defense as much as drafting secondary.

DT: both backups are FAs

WR: I still think we need a speedy receiver

PR/KR:

OLB, OC, RB and TE are all getting older and more expensive so there is some need there also

Needless to say we have enough "needs" to make it where BPA will most likely fall under being a need.
