Kony Ealy

this is the best answer in the thread.

Ya simply can't judge a rookie DE based on his rookie play.

Watching him, he's a talented guy with good effort.

He will benefit from and offseason or two of bulking up and developing more.

The posts in this thread crying about tackles is sad. Anybody who considers themselves a fan knows ya don't draft based on need. Tackle would have been a teach in the second round. period.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut eventually.

You absolutely should draft based on need and every team does to an extent. Why do you think we went WR I'm the first round?

He's better than Horton.

last year during his rookie season,(UDFA) Wes Horton played in 10 games and recorded 8 tackles,2 sacks.quite comparable numbers to (second round pick)Kony Ealys first 10 games.so in fact there isn't a big difference between these two, imo.

Because Kelvin was the highest rated player on our board and the results have speak for themselves.

Teams that draft solely on need are teams that are drafting at the top year after year....

I will be shocked if Ealy finishes the season with better stats than those of even Everette Browns rookie season much less Hardys.

Rookie Stats

1.Hardy,30 tackles,3 sacks,2 forced fumbles, saftey (blocked a punt in his very first NFL game)

2.Everette Brown,22 tackles,2.5 sacks,2 forced fumbles

3.Ealy (with 5 games remaining)9 tackles,1 sack,0 forced fumbles

Edit

Charles Johnson rarely was afforded an opportunity to play during his 2007 rookie campaign.due to the fact we had Mike Rucker and Julius Peppers.however, when Rucker retired at the end of the 2007 season,it allowed CJ to start the following season in all 16 games; where he recorded 25 tackles,6 sacks,1 forced fumble

Tyler Brayton started opposite Peppers in 2008, 2009. CJ didn't become a full-time starter until 2010, his fourth year. Just pointing out that he didn't have that pressure until he had a few years on the bench.

Going BPA has left us holes at key positions.

No, years of worthless drafts have left the team thin at key positions. Stew, Hardy, and Cam are the only players still on the roster from the 08, 09, 10, and 11 drafts. Hell, the entire 2009 draft is now off the roster and Hardy is the last of 2010, so that draft is pretty much gone as well. That is Matt Millen-level incompetence.

Typing that out was painful.

two drafts in a row (2009, 2010) with no first round pick as well.  we basically lost a first in 2011 when hurney dealt what ended up being the 33rd pick of that draft to the patriots on top of that.

this team is straight up talent starved.

If you want to focus just on 2010 and 2011 drafts, sure. But Hurney was excellent from 2002-2009 - even without many big-name free agents, we never were worse than 7-9.

lol "excellent" from 2002-2009?  you sure about that?

you know that timeframe includes trading back into the first to draft jeff otah and sending a first round pick off for everette brown right?  and the delhomme extension?  and the peppers fiasco?

all of you who dogpile on dave gettleman for not drafting a starter in literally every round of every draft should take a hard look at some hurneymagic:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolina_Panthers_draft_history

most of his drafts are seriously like one solid/perhaps even elite player + a bunch of crap that's not even good enough to stay on the team as depth.  if gettleman drafts like that for the next decade then yes by all means fire his ass.
