Kony Ealy

I will be shocked if Ealy finishes the season with better stats than those of even Everette Browns rookie season much less Hardys.

Rookie Stats

1.Hardy,30 tackles,3 sacks,2 forced fumbles, saftey (blocked a punt in his very first NFL game)

2.Everette Brown,22 tackles,2.5 sacks,2 forced fumbles

3.Ealy (with 5 games remaining)9 tackles,1 sack,0 forced fumbles

Edit

Charles Johnson rarely was afforded an opportunity to play during his 2007 rookie campaign.due to the fact we had Mike Rucker and Julius Peppers.however, when Rucker retired at the end of the 2007 season,it allowed CJ to start the following season in all 16 games; where he recorded 25 tackles,6 sacks,1 forced fumble

I think Kony Ealy has played like a basic bitch like all of our DEs have this year, but this is misleading. Because Everette Brown was the first player we drafted that year, Fox gave him way more playing time than Ealy has had this year.

Were you around for Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson's rookie years?  They didn't exactly set the world on fire either.

Other than the guys picked at the very top of the draft, rookie DEs tend to have quiet transitions.

Not to mention Hardy was a liability in run defense as a rookie.  He was good in pursuit, but struggled holding the edge and often overran plays.

Really? Justin Britt is better right now than any tackle we have.

this is pure hindsight.  britt was a projected third day pick and his name wasn't in anybody's mouth here in the second round.

if the huddle hivemind had somehow taken over the war room on draft day and selected an OT in that round it would've been morgan moses.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but I was just using it as an example to show there were talented tackles still out there. Really feel like we should have used our 2nd pick addressing a need. Instead we wasted it on a guy with falling stock in an area at least at the time we were deep at.

could Ealy lose weight and play OLB with his 4.69,40 speed?because he is not strong enough right now to play DE in the NFL (22 reps of 225 at the NFL combine, not impressed) and it translates to his style of play on the field and in practice (Norwell,Newton,etc..).so,he better bulk up and play with some intensity if he has any plans of competing at this level.

Pretty sure Ealy is the only one of those mentioned that have/had to rotate with 3 other guys at the same position.  Ealy has played 210 defensive snaps after 11 games this season.  Hardy played 400 defensive snaps his rookie season.  I doubt Ealy gets close to that with only 5 games remaining.

that sure does speak volumes about Kony Ealys talent.you know, having to rotate with all these other talented DE on our team.are you serious?

I'll wait until 2016 to form an opinion

this is the best answer in the thread.

Ya simply can't judge a rookie DE based on his rookie play.

Watching him, he's a talented guy with good effort.

He will benefit from and offseason or two of bulking up and developing more.

The posts in this thread crying about tackles is sad. Anybody who considers themselves a fan knows ya don't draft based on need. Tackle would have been a reach in the second round. period.

Lord, if that would have been the pick...

You're the genius throwing around stats, as a comparison point, based off of a full season versus 10 games(he didn't even play week 1), and half the snap count.  You could see the potential in Hardy in his first two years, but he didn't do much.  Same can be said for Ealy.  He can't help the coaching staff wanted him to be limited his first season.  That was said from the beginning.

I don't know if you can compare Ealy's stats to other DEs rookie season because I believe Ealy missed game one, and also you don't know how many snaps Ealy has played compared to other De's snap count their rookie year.

I do believe that Ealy will have to have a good offseason to learn more of the game and gain some weight to fill out his frame. I don't think he has the speed of Hardy but he could use other strengths to succeed. I look for Kony to have a few good games before seasons end.
