so tired of the conspiracy threads. Gettleman has the green light to do wtf he wants to get this team to the superbowl.  Thats why he is here.  Jr would not have brought him in and put fuging handcuffs on him.  JR let him cut Smith.  That should have proved it to you ppl.  Gettleman does/did not have set anyone up for failure when he has 100% control of the team to do as he pleases to get JR a Superbowl.  We done?

This: How much time do you think big cat has on this earth?? Think he would hire a GM that wants to sabotage a franchise quarterback which would then take years to redefine another one into a SB winning QB/team?

Let's step away from the conspiracy theories people and look at the obvious state of the franchise. Personally I believe the light is at the end of the tunnel....it's just not this year...

Gentlemen likes diamond in the ruff type of players, which makes him very stubborn with a huge ego. He doesn't like outspoken players, which is proven, so he probably don't like outspoken coaches. I'm starting to think Rivera is a puppet and is scared to speak out. That's why Steve smith said he could have had his back by saying something when beefing with Gentlemen. Gentlemen is up to something and it doesn't look like it's anything good at this point.

For one year though? Would three good players have signed one year deals?

Probably not. Hindsight is 50/50 :D. No one expected Hardy issue to happen.

And I would rather have 1 Greg Hardy for one year than three players who couldn't command more than a one year deal

Why would they have to be 1 year deals? Is there no one in the league we like enough to keep them around more than 1 year?

$13 million in cap space can go a long way. The key is signing the right people, not guys like Harper.

And this argument has absolutely nothing to do with his later unavailability. It is all about the decision to rent one guy for one year at a very high price.

Because we are trying to free up cap space for Luke and Cam over the next 2 years. We are already in a cap mess, and we need a lot more space the next two years to get those contracts done.

That is why we were only doing 1 and 2 year deals the last 2 seasons.

That doesn't even take into account Star, KK, Benji who will be coming up eventually also.

In all honesty, I thought he was seeing if Cam could take this team on his back with very little help, and succeed ... before extending him... which has failed miserably, but, that is just my opinion, who knows. Then you have to factor in the salary cap bullshit mess that he was left with... too much of a headache, we will see this off season what his plan is

Thing is Cam could carry this team if he had tackles that were at least adequate. It's just that they are really that bad.

Fans need to realize that Dave Gettleman was brought here to mold a team concept that will have continued success year after year.

Gettleman  inherited a salary cap mess and it's going to take time for it to get it  straightened out,he can't do it by going salary cap crazy like Marty Hurney did, just to win one season and lose the next.

Make no mistake,Gettleman's job is on the line and requires that the Panthers becoming successful every year,if he can't accomplish this he becomes history. To think he has some childish vendetta planned, would be way beyond foolish.

Nothing we did was about this year really. It is about the future.

Even though we tagged Hardy it was just essentially a one year contract. It wasn't a multi year contract that has cap ramifications past this season. Keep in mind that we have Cam and Kuechly extensions coming up over next two seasons. We had to reserve cap space for those two

We had to go discount window because of our long term cap mess. Last year we hit homeruns with Mitchell, Ginn, Mikkell, and others.

You lose all those guys, plus your starting pro bowl LT, plus Munnerlyn and we had to replace them without committing to long term high dollar contracts. With the price and length we were offering it was going to be impossible to get same value, and we did sign two safeties that are very flawed but had both played in Pro Bowls.

I think he did the best he could. It is hard to evaluate him until we get out of this cap mess and he has a few more drafts (and possibly a coaching hire) under his unusually high on his waist belt

Because of cap hell and two future stars you want to lock up long term over the next two years

This is pretty much what Bill Polian said last night on Sirius/XM, when asked about the job Gettleman was doing. He didn't mention Luke though. Cams contract is big enough to force his hand and require holding back cap room.
