A moment of class...

Ah, Keary Colbert. I really thought he was going to be big.

After he set rookie receiving records, there was every reason to believe that.

Maybe Smitty drove DJ to drink .........

I think Jarrett pretty much screwed himself.

Reports are Smitty was harsh with him too, but with Jarrett there was reason to be.

There was some talk a while back (from Drew Carter, I think) that Colbert actually could have been a good player but Steve Smith pretty much destroyed him in the locker room.

No idea how valid that is, but Carter would have been in a position to know.

Smith was a great player but no so much as a person.

Smith was a great player but no so much as a professional.

Fixed that for you. I've never heard anything except positives about Smitty in regard to his personal life. He may be a dick to fellow NFL athletes on the field and in the locker room, but I don't think you can blanket state he isn't a good person.

You know that guy who's been your friend for years (or maybe a family member) who sometimes - often inexplicably or unexpectedly - just suddenly starts acting like a total dick to people?

The one who occasionally puts you in the position of having to explain and apologize for him, usually with a phrase like "Well, that's just kinda how he is"...

That's Smitty.

He was always a double-edged sword.

If I don't have any friends like that...does that mean I'm that friend?

The early Smitty was a complete asshat off the field too. It was not until he had kids that he started to melo.

it was well known that Smith was generally not accomodating of rookies.  Theory was that he didn't like helping develop guys who could eventually replace him.  Others said he was just surly (all speculation, of course).

As to Colbert, in his first season he set the records for Panthers rookie receivers that remained up till now.  that's what his tweet is all about.

The year after that, it was like he just forgot everything about how to play football.  And eventually, he was gone.

It does lend itself pretty well to conspiracy theories.

Are they valid?  No idea.

Colbert, of course, broke the rookie records while Smith was hurt.  And did nothing of worth after.  So there's something to that.

I remember The Colbert Report website made a joke saying that this is not the Panthers Rookie WR's tv show or something alone those lines.

This would have been season #10 for him if he worked out for us on the team. Just look at the list of WR we have gone though since 2004....

Ricky Prohel

Steve Smith

Moose

Karl Hankton

Drew Carter

Taye Biddle

Keyshawn Johnson (god really? I almost want to block that out)

Jason Carter

Dwayne Jarrett

Ryne Robinson

Travis Taylor

D.J. Hackett

Mark Jones

Kenny Moore

Charly Martin

David Clowney

David Gettis

Brandon Lafell

Devin Thomas

Wallace Wright

Darvin Adams

Seyi Ajirotutu

Leegedu Naanee

Kealoha Pillaris

Joe Adams

Louis Murphy

Ted Ginn Jr

Tavarress King

Marvin McNutt

RJ Webb

Kelvin Benjamin

Brenton Bersin

Philly Brown

Jerricho Cotchery

Jason Avant

We have seriously just thrown poo against the wall and hoped for the best at WR since 2004
