Coaching Failure: Avant was misused

Avant was tailor-made for those situations.

 

 

With Cotchery, we really don't need Avant.

 

They're not using him right either. 

 

Cotchery has shown himself to be a redzone type guy, but they've try to make him a deep threat too.

Obviously with all the TDs last year. Cotchery lacks top end speed so basically he's only useful for short passes. Hopefully with Avant gone Philly will get more time to show us if he's capable of being the future at WR. I wouldn't be against Bersin being our #3 but Philly has more potential and speed.

I have to disagree. Avant never showed me anything no matter WHAT kind of route they had him run.

Reminds me of what we did with Smith last year. Cleary he was better suited for shorter routes that would emphasis him getting YAC but we're tossing bombs to him like he's 24.

Avant is very solid but unfortunately he was misused and him and Cam were almost never on the same page.

And let's talk about Philly Brown (as mentioned elsewhere).

 

Yes I know he was injured at one point, but after his performance in that early game, how could anyone not see what he was capable of doing?

 

I came out of that game expecting him to have a much bigger role in future games.  But then even when he did get healthy, the one true deep threat the team had stayed primarily a return man while the coaches had Newton throwing deep balls and flea flickers and running reverses to possession receivers.

 

They just do not know what they are doing.

2nd and short---predictable runs

 

3rd and short---"Let's trick e'm, long bomb to the 30 y/o possession receivers!!!!!"

 

Those 2nd and short runs up the gut piss me off as much as the 3rd and 2 bombs.  I mean seriously, THAT is when you take a gd shot!!!  If you don't convert, you have 3rd and short to run it with Stewart who can fall forward and get 2 yards.  Slam run right up the gut, none of this counter, sweep, etc garbage that often gets stuffed in the backfield.

Jason Avant did not fail the Panthers, Rivera and Shula failed Avant by not using his style to the best advantage. One more obvious sign of their poor job management and style of coaching.

Jason Avant is a pure possession receiver in the mold of Ricky Proehl.  His best work was done finding soft spots in the zone for short yardage and moving the chains.  He had also been known for having some of the most reliable hands in the league.

 

So with that in mind, why on earth would you send him out on long passes and deep go routes instead of using him in the way he was known to be effective?

 

For his part, Avant didn't look like his usual self when he was getting the ball.  What were arguably some of the best hands in the league started dropping passes.  It seemed as if he wasn't able to catch passes thrown with the kind of velocity Newton generates.  Jerricho Cotchery has had the same issue.

 

But this too could have been adjusted for via coaching. 

 

Although you generally want to discourage 'body catching', it could actually work as an option when recevers are having trouble catching speed balls.  Truthfully, that would probably still be a good idea for Cotchery in the games that remain.

 

No such correction for Avant now. 

 

"No separation" the coaches say.  And what's sad is that after using a possession receiver like a deep threat, they're actually surprised by this.

Avant doesn't get many long passes at all  does he? I don't know about the attempts but his average reception is down to about 5 yds down from about 10 from last season.

 

While the play certainly has a preferred option the QB in the end makes the decision where to throw the ball. That can't be ignored.People criticize going to  Cotchery deep all the time but it might be Newton feels comfortable going that way.
