Jason Avant Cut

I understand what you're saying - most people here are agreeing with you. I personally think answering a question that calls out your coach/boss is unprofessional - no matter the manner in which is was delivered. I'm sure he's not the only one feeling the frustration but he's the only one pointing fingers. Zod's made it pretty clear that Olsen has to bite his tongue when he was responding to questions. If I (politely) pointed fingers at my boss I would expect repercussions.

Avant was also in a postion he could speak. Others aren't. Many have to bite their tongue.

Avant is a one year rental that likely knows his career is at the end. He gets his money regardless. Why be a sheep if you are him when asked about something so obvious?

Mentioned this earlier in this thread.

Go watch his interview from Monday if you already haven't. His tone completely changed when asked about the play calling and it was pretty obvious he was doing his best to hold back his true feelings

It's called being a professional. I would LOVE to hear what he wants to say though. Guy was having a Pro Bowl season and then we started going away from him AND making stupid in-game decisions/calls. He's got to be towards the top of the frustration pole.

Just because something is the truth, does not mean that you can always be free to spout it.

"Damn woman, your azz looks 3 feet wide in that dress"  for instance.

Coaches cannot get in front of the microphone and say:

"Cam really sucked today, he overthrew like every other throw, no way we can win like that"

"We are really in a bind because of the money situation, we have 2 guys at OT that are waaaaaay over their head and we know it"

"We hate having Hardy on the exempt list, because the rest of the DE's just don't seem to be able to get any pressure at all"

"We might have a better running game, but the guys on our team making all the money, can't seem to avoid injuries cause they aren't getting any younger"

See, coaches cannot do that, you cannot say something just because you feel it the truth and players aren't exempt.

Please, lol. He didn't say anything comparable to those examples.

His comments:

"I've been in the league a long time," Avant said after the game, via The Charlotte Observer. "I know two things. You never want to give a team a chance to win a game, with how much time was left on the clock. And asking a kicker to make a 50-yard field goal with the game on the line is rough sledding. If that's the only option, yes. But if it's not, you want to get as close as you can and think score and play to score a touchdown. Because I’d rather the team have to score a touchdown to win the game than to have to kick a field goal. It’s just a lot different. It’s a 30-yard difference."

Olsen's emotions lately have voiced a lot of his thoughts without him saying a word.

Actions speak louder than words. After plays you can tell Greg ain't happy. Don't care what PC bs he spews to reporters

I'm glad he spoke up. I think it's awesome. But I'm not surprised he was let go because of his lack of production (coaches misuse aside) and for his comments. And I don't, personally, think it was a big loss because (like you said) he wasn't going to be here next year.

So what's the issue?

His actions of frustration don't speak louder than blatantly telling the media your coach made the wrong call.

Yep definitely not going to argue the professional part. However I think many are reaching their breaking point. I'm not mad at all about Avant the player being cut, I'm mad that this organization is continuing to stand behind this staff that is clearly in over their heads.

I can't imagine the players will be too happy with Avant getting cut after voicing the opinions of what i assume to be many in the locker room and not just his.

This whole season has been a complete mess. Fixing this has to begin with Rivera and Shula being cut loose as soon as the season ends

I agree that making a public statement like this is a huge risk.  He'd certainly have been wiser not to do so.

My thing though: Rivera could have handled it in a much less reactionary manner and he'd have come out looking good.  Right now he just looks petty and thin-skinned.

And as to Avant, a lot of the failure in his production this year is because he wasn't being used according to his skill set.  That's not his fault.

Bottom Line: It's pretty much always the case that the criticism which angers you the most is the one that you know deep down is actually true.

One of the league's true "good guys" off the field, Avant simply can't get it done between the lines anymore. The 31-year-old possession receiver is painfully slow and gives nothing after the catch, turning in a 21-201-1 line this season. The Panthers are far better off with Philly Brown as their No. 3. Avant also (rightfully) questioned some play-calling that went down at the end of Sunday's loss to the Falcons.

Rotworld's latest evaluation of Avant. Painfully slow...

If Avant deserved to lose his job because of those comments, then Rivera should as well. It was Rivera who made the exact same blunder last season versus Buffalo, and he then himself openly admitted that he regretted it and would do differently moving forward.

Ron's own comments:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera experienced a "revelation'' that turned his team's season at a metaphorical crossroads.

Rivera was driving through the middle of an intersection near his Charlotte-area home before his 0-2 Panthers played the New York Giants.

The coach was so consumed by his decision not to go for it on fourth-and-1 late in a Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills, he never saw the traffic light change on his commute from the Panthers complex.

"I got so focused in on that decision, I run a red light and almost got sideswiped,'' Rivera told USA TODAY Sports. "After that I'm like, 'What was I thinking?'

"I realized that these are the things I have to do to give us a chance to win.''

Only issue I have is that i find it sad our 4th WR had a better handle of football situations than our HC.

No other real issue for me.

If Rivera has lost his job (please...please...please) it's not going to happen until after the season. Let's wait until then to start flipping out over that.

I really think this is more GMan. I think he looked at everything - Avant being a temp player, poor production, younger options, and speaking out - and said see ya later.
