Jason Avant Cut

He didn't deserve to get cut because he spoke his mind on play calling they make up a excuse for philly to get more time truth is if they wanted to give philly more time avant could have watched from the bench and provided coaching to young philly!

Why keep a guy on the bench if you're not intending on playing him? 1) move a young guy up (which they did) and 2) let Avant move on rather than keep him locked up

Well I'll make it clear.

Out of all the problems with our team right now, I think the last concern should be why we kept a guy who has actually contributed this season with first down catches, and several receptions, one for a touchdown, over a guy with zero career numbers on a practice squad.

It's not a major concern, just one I mentioned.  Damn you jump to extremes.

This move was made because the season is pretty much already over.

I didn't think that Ron would be fired in the offseason....until this happened. Now I fully think that he is a goner, and DG is about to put his thumbprint on the team.

DG already put a foot stomp on the team. You are not going to get anyone with value in free agency. There will be no retention of franchise players under him. They will all leave first thing.

DG has already ended his career. You just don't see it yet. A GM must have players/coaches who believe in him or a big check book. DG has neither.

Set us back 3 years plus the time he is retained. Panthers are officially a feeder team with Gettleman.

Wonder how long until JR figures this out.

what makes you think ron is now for sure gone because DG cut avant?

Coaches like RR love their vets, and will play them over playing younger players like Bersin and Philly, especially if their job is on the line.

DG is taking control of that, in the only way he can.  He wants to see if the younger players can rise up to the occasion.

I am of the opinion that DG has never really loved RR, but they had a good relationship, and DG trusted RR's football knowledge....I don't think that's the case any longer.

RR will likely be working for the Chargers next season, and Shula will be flipping burgers.  DG is about to clean house.

If we hadn't given Ron that extension, I would say you are likely correct, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's still here next season.

Cutting a high character guy in the wake of criticism is rarely a positive for a coach in trouble.

For an established coach, maybe.  For a guy who's struggling, it looks insecure, thin skinned and petty.

It also looks desperate, which is probably an accurate description of our coach at this point.

Doesn't change my opinion that its probably a good long term move for the team.  Especially if Rivera is not here next year, which is a definite possibility at this point.

Bold roster moves don't come when a team is doing well - they always come when teams are doing poorly. Therefore, they most likely can be interpreted as desperate.

interesting. i thought it would have been the opposite. Avant was speaking out against the HC and can't have a mutiny especially from a guy who is as likable as Avant in the locker room.

I guess i can see it both ways. A poster on here has mentioned that Shula has been good as gone since about 3 or 4 weeks ago from a source of his who called smitty and gross way before it was official.

I think you're right though. This offseason if nothing else will be exciting as hell.

what makes you think ron is not for sure gone because DG cut avant?

Because they cut someone who spoke out against the coaching staff.

The Bobcats made a questionable hire in Mike Dunlap and followed it up with a record that was to be expected of a rebuilding team. Yet Dunlap was dismissed, because management heard directly from the players that they did not like playing for him. They hired Steve Clifford that offseason and the rest is history.

If you want to keep your locker room, listen to the players. Trust their abilities. They know what they can and can't do. Challenge them. Maximize their abilities.

This screams "high school football" mentality, not a room of six and seven figure making professionals.
