IMO stew will be our feature back next year, because he's got the skills to do the job, and even though he's overpaid it's better than eating a cap hit and replacing him with someone much less effective.

 

kalil will be here because he's got chemistry with cam and is legitimately a top-five player at his position, and with four other positions on the line to be improved you don't really wanna toss center in there as well.

I think it starts with who is coaching the team. If Ron is back, Bell is back. Kalil is back no matter what, but honestly we could pay three good lineman for what he's making. Hardy gone no matter what. I expect CJ to sign a long term extension but it depends on his feelings towards the coaching staff. 

 

I think one of those running backs are gone. Probably Deangelo. Those two have been a ball and chain on our offense for years. 

 

Thomas Davis probably needs to restructure. Honestly I think we should cut Nate Chandler but if Ron is back, Nate is back. I think Amini gets another chance but this season was pathetic from him. Trai Turner needs a veteran helping him. He needs someone at RT that will be in the correct place every play and I don't think Bell or Chandler is that guy.

CJ, Kalil, and Davis present the largest potential savings. I would expect one of them to be gone.

Tolbert actually presents the most savings among the running backs.

A lot of people keep talking about restructuring some of them but some of the players have been restructured so much there isn't much to save. For example restructuring Kalil only would only lower his cap cost about $4m in 2015 and that would just increase his cap cost the following year.

We also have the option of extending some of these players, which could potential lower their cap cost, but most of these guys are getting older so not sure if the FO wants to do that.

The problems are in a few very specific positions (offensive line, end, secondary), and with money (which can be achieved next season), we can at least field a decent team. You don't add by subtracting, you add by adding.

And no, even if you are blowing up this team, you don't get rid of the only lineman that is any good. Ryan Kalil is literally the only thing keeping this from being the worst line in history. The solution is to draft tackles and find veteran guards.

That Jonathan Stewart contract....every time I see the numbers, I just can't believe it's real. That has to be a joke. Jonathan Stewart is still a good running back, but that might be the worst contract since Sean Gilbert or extending Jake Delhomme after the Arizona playoff game.

I'm not even talking Panthers just in general terms. Let's say you are a new expansion team.

This isn't an expansion team, it's a team one year removed from a playoff birth that has a few very specific, fixable flaws.

 

And yes, if I had an expansion team I would shell out on a top-three center. Having a good line does a lot for your young quarterback.

Kalils base salary is $5M. That is the only part we can push forward by reconstructing. The prorated $6.5M will hit regardless.

June first is no free lunch, you just spread the problem over two years. To push dead money into 2016 will just make the rebuilding take longer.

Question is really, should we go into full rebuild and cut all five and tank 2015? Because there is no way we will be competitive with that kind of dead money.
