My Biggest Fear with Cam Long-Term

I love watching NFL offenses like we've seen last night in the Steelers.  I like watching the Patriots offense at work, the Packers offense, etc.  The common denominator with all those offenses isn't just great QB play, great O-line play, and offensive weapons.  They all run pro formations!  The running backs don't have to guess whether or not they will get the ball out of a read option, and the quarterbacks are only concerned with throwing the ball. (Running only as a last resort)  

 

 

My biggest fear with Cam is we will never have a pro set offense.  That our offense will always resemble some form of the read option and designed run calls.  Even if we brought in a strictly pro set offensive HC, my fear is they will see Cam, and want to use some college bull with him.  Neither Chud nor Shula were college mentality, read option type guys.  Yet they have used a heavy dose of read options and design runs here, especially Chud in his second year.  I thought he went completely insane in 2012.  So even if we don't bring in a cat like Gus from Auburn, which thankfully I'm sure that will never happen, it's still possible we will see read options and design runs no matter who the coach is.  Even if we brought in some old cat like Joe Gibbs, who probably has no idea what a read option looks like.

 

 

Of course yall seen the graphic about all the hits Cam has taken since his rookie year.  Yall seen the effects it has had on him this year.  I imagine things will get worse for him as his career goes along at this rate.  Yet besides that, I believe the read option stuff is stunting his growth as a passing QB.  Here we are in year four, and he still has a lot of passes that are overthrown.  Yes, his O-line sucks, but that's not a good excuse for why his passes are still sailing.  Again I blame the college look to a lot of our offensive plays.  With that said, Cam can ball.  He can throw.  We've all seen it throughout his career so far.  Those two throws he threw for touchdowns this past Sunday were amazing.  At the same time, those two throws came from pro set formations.  I want to see that all the time.  Am I alone in this?  I'm not an old person, but I am old school in my thinking concerning offensive play.  I want an offense like the Packers, Broncos, Steelers, Titans, and just about every offense that doesn't have the "athletic" QB.

So this is not a concern for anyone?  Of course I want to have a serious discussion with this.  I know I've commented about trading Cam in the past, this being the main reason why, not because he's an awful QB.  There's the injury side to this, and the passing side.  If Cam could be like Elway or Steve Young, I love his athletic ability.  Yet I hate it if we are going to run him into the ground.  Why would you not want Cam to run an offense like Brady, Rodgers, Peyton, Big Ben, etc.?  It's offenses that are ran like theirs, is the one I want.  Those are still the best offenses in the league.  Those college style offenses will never succeed in this game.

i actually want a coach who will make the most out of Cams talents. A system that compliments Cam for who he is, an exceptional althlete and QB.

the read option would be a nice sprinkle if it wasnt the obly damn thing that worked.

God, Cam with a good line, WRs, and agood system would be exceptional

I don't give a fug if we go to a flexbone triple option.  I just want to score and be efficient

 

Heehee.  Yet with the wishbone offense, that doesn't work all that well in college.  Georgia Tech only get a handful of wins every year.

 

The biggest thing is, it just doesn't work.  What still works best, is the pro set offenses.  Cam can run when things break down, just like Elway and Steve Young used to do.  He should be able to do it a heck of a lot better than they could have dreamed of.  Yet anything designed just takes away from his priority as a passer.  I only want to use Cam's athleticism when things break down.  Like he did in that touchdown run vs the Saints a couple of weeks back.  That is vintage Cam.

Chip Kelly might be getting figured out this year.  Yet I will say that Chip's offense is much more dynamic than the simple read option.  His offense does involve a lot of passing, and there's depth to it unlike what we see with Gus' offense at Auburn.  In any case, I would still rather the traditional offense to the college style. (Of course I call the read option play college style because it's predominantly ran there.)

The Panthers did the first four games, etc this season and Cam looked pretty good staying in and throwing from the pocket.  Then he got "healthy" , ran for 100 yards against the Bengals and it was back to this pistol formation and running game from the shotgun as the base offense.  

 

Cam would be fine in a pro style offense if the Panthers had a halfway decent O-Line, RB's, more speed at the WR position, and better coaching staff.

Who besides Chip Kelly has a lot of experience outside of traditional pro style offenses.

 

It doesn't work as well because most of these OCs don't know what they are doing, as it pertains to spread read option type offenses.

 

Also, there isn't a great deal of difference between what Kelly is doing and teams like New England and Denver are doing.  Philly just moves at a much faster pace

      I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛

      bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
