Has any side dish ascended faster than green bean casserole?

I'd say in the last 20 years, no side dish has experienced a meteoric ascension on the Thanksgiving table like green bean casserole. A virtual unknown in the days of my youth, this casserole is the Kirk Herbstreet of sides.

And I use cream of chicken instead of cream of mushroom soup in my recipe.

It's gotten so popular because it's probably the easiest side to make. Canned green beans, add a giant can of cholesterol and top it with crunchy fat chunks and presto. Another artery clogger.
