As with Hue Jackson, there's a lot of discussion going on right now about Colts OC Pep Hamilton as a possible head coaching candidate if Rivera is fired.  So here's some info for your perusal, starting with his coaching resume'...

NOTES:

 

Besides the direct instances, Hamilton also has a few 'shirt tail' connections to the Panthers.  Herm Edwards is a close friend and former teammate of former Panthers Head Coach John Fox.  Bob Babich's son Bobby was a Panthers defensive assistant during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.  Brian Polian is the son of former Panthers GM Bill Polian.  And of course, Jim Harbaugh's final season as an NFL player was with the Panthers.

 

In addition to that, Hamilton has worked under two head coaches that also employed Ron Rivera (Norn Turner and Lovie Smith but hasn't worked directly with him.  He narrowly missed working with Rivera in Chicago.  Rivera was there from 2004 to 2006.  Hamilton arrived in 2007.  Hamilton also worked with Turner's brother Ron.

 

Speaking of which, Hamilton is also known for a notoriously rocky relationship with Jay Cutler.  Cutler hated Hamilton and practically ignored him, choosing instead to work directly with then Bears OC Ron Turner.  He wanted the Bears to bring over his old QB coach from Denver, Jeremy Bates.  Bates did eventually get the Bears QB Coach job, but not until 2012.  Cutler, however, successfully got Hamilton fired from the Bears staff at the end of the 2009 season.

 

Were he hired, Hamilton would obviously be a departure from the Panthers usual MO of hiring defensive head coaches.  His offensive pedigree is actually pretty impressive.  He's worked with some great offensive minds; namely Paul Hackett, Mike Heimerdinger, the Turner brothers and Jim Harbaugh.  Given his work with Andrew Luck, the thought of Hamilton guiding Cam Newton has a lot of Panther fans salivating.

 

Is it possible? 

 

We shall see.

plus he went to West Charlotte High School.he is my choice as of right now. has shown the ability to adjust his game plan when he needs to. plays to his personnel  strength, within his philosophy.

 

 

Hmm...didn't realize that, I went to West Charlotte as well.  I'm just a few months older than he is, surprised I don't remember him.  It was a big school, though.

As a high school kid in Charlotte when the Panthers were just getting started, you have to imagine he'd have been a fan.

Good read on Hamilton from Mike Freeman...

 

Colts OC Pep Hamilton Is the NFL's Hottest Head Coaching Candidate

 

(yes, it's Bleacher Report; it's still good)

 

There was something I remember Matt Hasselbeck, backup quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, telling me about offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, 40, last season. It went like this:

Pep sees and remembers everything. It's almost like he has a photographic memory. He and Andrew Luck are a perfect tandem because Andrew also sees everything. I also think Pep is a great combination of strategist and listener. He takes in all input and listens to the players, but in the end he makes the decisions. That's the kind of coach you want.

 

What Hamilton fans won't like from that article is this...

 

Several league sources say Hamilton will be among the leading candidates, if not the leading candidate, with two different high-profile teams should they make coaching changes. Hamilton would be a strong consideration in San Francisco, several sources say, as an alternative to the hard-charging (and that's putting it nicely) Jim Harbaugh.

 

The other discussed scenario among some team executives is if the Giants fail to make the playoffs again, Hamilton would replace Tom Coughlin.

 

Hamilton coaching Kaepernick would be a waste :(

As a high school kid in Charlotte when the Panthers were just getting started, you have to imagine he'd have been a fan.

 

He would have been a high school junior during the Fall of 91 or 92 based upon his age. He graduated from Howard in 96.
