You can still see at times what is so frustrating about PJ. It isn't defensive ability, it is consistent defensive focus and effort

It is the occasional not knowing who he is guarding like in the 3rd quarter last game. There were a couple plays tonight where he was lackadaisical on close outs and opponents got good looks.

The ability is there and you see it in spurts, you just want him to be more consistent.

The first game he played in he was locked in and was good on defense. When he starts doing that all the time he is going to play more and be a force on both ends

So in other words it's frustrating that he's a rookie?

If that is the way you took it then yeah.

That is definitely part of it. But I would rather rookies be making bad rookie plays mentally rather than mistakes of effort and focus. It was a recurring issue at UNC and in d-league.

As a coach you can live with rookies or freshmen making silly turnovers or taking occasional bad shots and things like that. But when mistakes are because of effort or focus it is much more frustrating.

PJ will get it though. I really think that. I am a big fan of his. Truly.

Maybe. He did play most of a season in the D League, so he isn't your typical rookie.

The kid has so much talent but his basketball IQ is really low.  He isn't a smart cookie and it is going to take time to round out his game to something more than being just a shooter.

PJ's D was pretty bad in the first quarter, but really the team D as a whole was terrible. They've got to quit getting off to these slow starts where they can't hit a shot and aren't playing D. I saw a few times on switches where Al was on a smaller player and not only did he not move out of the lane, he didn't even get a hand up.

I can't comprehend why some of you think he needs more then 17 minutes. He shouldn't get more then 10-12. He's a rookie spot up shooter and nothing else as of now. Do I think he'll be good? Yes. But the dude isn't Kobe or MJ and being instantly rushed into a heavy role won't end well for him.
