Quarterback Coaching

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

We made a huge mistake by giving Ron Rivera that extension. This offseason Jerry Richardson needs to eat that contract and get some people in here that can groom a QB. Don't get me wrong I like Ron Rivera but he is not Head Coach material. He is a DC playing the role of a HC and the job is to big for him. This explains the reason he can evaluate talent, he cant hide or exploit weakness, and he is horrible at managing the game.

Awesome stuff, Mr. Scott. Depressing b/c this organization is "square peg meet round hole" and not the forward, innovative thinking type to bring in a coach like this...but awesome nonetheless. We can only hope and pray someday JR et al will get a clue.

Richardson didn't technically 'pick' Rivera.  He just signed off on Hurney's choice.  In all likelihood he may have set guidelines ahead of time for the search.

There have been rumblings since then that he's not exactly Rivera's biggest fan, but I've never known if there was any truth to that.  Obviously he signed off on the extension.

If Rivera is let go, the next guy will be chosen by Dave Gettleman, whom I believe is more open to offensive coaches.  he also wouldn't need any guidelines set for him about what to look for because he's an actual football guy and not a converted PR man.

We've already ruined Cam and his growth. I really don't think it's possible to get his confidence back unless it's a change of scenery. Not to mention that is 4 years wasted that Cam could have been learning the game if he had ANY good offensive coaching. It's actually quite sad. There's always time to grow and progress, but he isn't going to find it here. Good post BTW, even though it made me kind of depressed.

If he can get a new coaching staff he can get a lot better.

That all depends on who we are bringing in. You're mighty confident that this organization will hire an offensive minded coach, let alone a competent one.

This may be the reason Rivera is pushing Can this year. He knows he is not safe and needs to meet expectations. All the while padding his stats if he gets fired. Really, is there any other reason he left Cam out there Monday night.

I certainly hope so. The thing that impressed me most about the information on Christensen is the culture that permeates the Colts' organization - mistakes are not tolerated and in-depth preparation is expected. While I think we may have this mindset to a degree on the defense side of the ball (injuries and lack of talent in key spots are the issues there IMO), this is seriously lacking on offense and special teams, and has been for years now. Talent can only get you so far; the culture of the team needs this type of change.

I would have no problem hiring Christensen or Clement or Bevell as OC but none of them have had any head coaching experience at any level.  Christensen at least had a role as an assistant head coach but otherwise they have never been in that role.  Seems to me you would be replacing one guy who had to learn as he went with another guy just like him except from the offensive side of the ball.

I was someone with a proven track record as a head coach instead of being a training ground for guys to learn at our expense.

Neither did John Harbaugh, Mike McCarthy, Sean Payton, or Mike Tomlin, and they've coached the winners of four out of the last six Super Bowls.  Likewise, Chuck Pagano, Mike Pettine, Mike McCoy and Mike Smith have all had some success in their first head coaching gigs.

What some of the smarter guys have often done in the past is hire someone for their staff who does have head coaching experience.  That way they have someone to help them learn the finer points in the process.

Mind you, I have nothing against going after a guy who had a prior stint (like say Gary Kubiak, Todd Haley or Pat Shurmur) but there have been plenty of guys who've succeeded their first time out too, including technically our own John Fox.

Well the way I look it is that they have a choice. They can waste Cam's ability or stunt his development or they can make a choice and get someone in here that can fix our offensive woes. I'm not saying that it's needs to be or that it's going to be a offensive minded coach. But this team needs change because the defensive coordinators Richardson has been hiring hasn't been cutting it so change could benefit.

Mistakes here are handled by saying "Well, I think they looked okay" and "They're doing the best they can"

There is a potential downside to hiring an offensive guy.

Some of them prefer picking and grooming their own star QB rather than working with reclamation projects.

In all likelihood, I expect anyone hired here will be asked extensively how they will coach Cam Newton and their answer will have a lot to do with whether they're hired or not.  Gettleman has stated Cam is a franchise Qb so it's hard to imagine him moving on from that.

But we do have to acknowledge that, however unlikely (I'd say "very") it is technically possible.

    • The SEC were not having GT upset Georgia at home. Horrendously corrupt officiating in this game - the non-PI on 4th down and the non-targeting call on the King fumble. Good lord.
    • I like how they were about to punt the ball right before the two minute warning before being like... oh fug, this'll be too obvious we gotta try a FG then ole boy skulls one that never got more than about 12 feet off the ground. LOL!
