The Gettleman Experience

Actually I tend to think Hardy is an extremely important piece on our defense. He had the talent to take over a game. Something you dont find every day in this league. He made everyones job easier his linemates, the backers, and the DBs.

The current state of our pass rush would tend to support this idea.

6,333,219$ in cap space...doesn't sound like mom and dad were broke for Xmas. We didn't need an xbox1, but but a used 360 would have been nice...and by that I mean bring in ANYONE to compete for a spot at tackle.

the FA market for tackles this year was balls okay.  a lot of average players got stupid big money.  so far jared veldheer is about the only one sticking out as a good value.  branden albert is playing well but he got a much bigger contract.  collins has been crap in tampa bay and his 2014 cap hit is $6 million.

pretty much your only chance to pick up one of those elusive solid tackles that won't break the bank is if the market is already so flooded with big name players that one of them slips through.  that only happens once every few years and 2014 wasn't one of those times.  it goes without saying that the panthers wouldn't be players for any of the A-list tackles and the reasons should be obvious.

also, when fans say "hoo boy just bring in anyone i mean ANYONE to compete at tackle!" they don't really mean it.  "anyone" in an NFL context is like mike remmers.  and we already did that.

As far as drafting an ot in the late rounds - would you rather have a  used corolla for 5 years and hope for the best or save up a year for when you can afford a lexus?

There's a problem here though.

We didn't draft a tackle because we didn't see any that would come in and be better than Bell/Chandler. People support this by pointing out how poorly many of the drafted tackles have played. And it is true that tackles often take awhile to develop.

However, next year those drafted tackles (at least the better ones) will now have a year of experience under their belt and will presumably start to play better. Meanwhile, our guy (assuming we draft one) will just be starting the first year learning curve, and Bell/Chandler may still be the go to guys while the new guy is learning. If not, we'll probably need to both sign a vet and spend a high pick to realize some improvement next year while investing in the future.

By not drafting anyone, all we've done is add a year to the improvement process.

i get what you're saying marguide but people wanted to bring in a rookie OT as a day one starter.  cam would probably still be getting pummelled and people would be pissed off and complaining about another "wasted year" and how cam is going to go play for the cowboys now either way.

i understand all that. People will b!tch no matter what. I think Gettleman, Rivera and Matsko all thought they weren't bound by the normal laws of the universe and they could get away with Bell and Chandler, and furthermore, I think they thought both of those guys were long-term solutions. Well, they judged wrong. By not hedging their bets and at least drafting a later round development project, we are in it deep now.

Hindsight is always perfect, but it sure seems like professionals should understand that sometimes plans don't work out and you need to have a plan B. We had no plan B. We were going to live and die by those two guys and some guy they pulled off a farm tractor in Canada. That seems a bit irresponsible to me.

In their defense, Gary Williams should have been available as a backup and his injury was something that was outside their control.

The only reason I point all this out isn't to take shots at our FO. It is more to caution people that are expecting to see a big improvement in our line next year. It is likely we have at least one more season of instability in front of us, at least at the tackle position. We should be okay at guard with minimal additional investment.

They waited until halfway through the season to bring in Remmers, lord knows if he could have made a difference had he been given a shot since camp.  We're this far into the season so we're stuck with the turd sandwich we were fed.  This thought process is how you turn Cam Newton into David Carr, you run a high school offense with Tackles that wouldn't make the 2 deep depth chart on most teams in the NFL.  Harper and Decoud fuging suck, BUT, atleast we know they tried to fill a hole, probably due to the fact we had no DB's on the roster, like at all.  Receiver, he gambled, failed, then went dumpster diving leaving us with one legitimate NFL receiver.  All of this while we tied up 13 mil on one player who is getting paid to pursue his rap career.  I thought the decisions for them in the offseason were either tag and trade, let him walk, or long term deal, instead the WORST case scenario happened and that was before the domestic abuse situation.  With an infinite number of obvious and glaring needs, we sunk a ton of our cap space into a turd who has had off field issues since he's been a member of the team and fell in the draft due to injury concerns, so even had he played, he guaranteed us nothing.  He was a broken bone or tore ACL away from being a waste of a ton of cap room.  Heres the truth, when you have 7 glaring holes (Strong Safety, Free Safety, Corner, Left Tackle, and Right Tackle, 2 Receivers).  You only have so many valuable draft picks and thankfully we hit on Benjamin.  You also only have so much cap room to make moves, and you spend 2/3 of it on a position not on that list, that's not about getting BPA, thats about flat out neglecting needs.  Not only this, we sank a second round draft pick on another DE after spending 13 mil in the offseason on one.  I know the BPA stuff, but you mean to tell me out of ALL of those desperate needs, no one available came close to the talent of Ealy...I'm pretty sure that's not true, but hey, that's not me.  He did pick up a guard in the 3rd, who's pretty good, but even then guard wasn't as glaring a need as those other mentioned positions.  Maybe you're right, it'd be like a kid asking for an Xbox 1, getting 2 boxes of Coal and a 42inch tv when he has a 55 inch already.  The majority of the Christmas money might not have bought an Xbox 1, but a 360 and a few games could have been bought and would have been closer to what he wanted.  The money that was spent, was spent on something that is awesome, but not as awesome when you already have it.  And on top of this, you're stuck with 2 Pieces of coal (Bell and Chandler).

I didn't read fully, I'm dumb, and I agree with you 100%.

That's actually a good point. We didn't add a year to the development process unless you think a 7th rounder is the long-term solution. Bell and chandler should be further along next year after a season of reps. maybe next year we'll be able to upgrade the Lt and bell can go back to the right side for a year.  Then we can address that side in 2016.

Unfortunately this line has not been able to gel.A lot of injuries.  I think bell and chandler will eventually be good, flexible, backups. I think the silotulo experiment is over though. That guy has not gotten better in 3 yrs.
