Two Words: "Nick Saban"

ThinkAboutIt

Not as the next Panthers head coach, but just as an example of what a difference a better coach with a clue makes.

Mike Shula...fired from Alabama. Nick Saban...three National Championships at Alabama since.

There is at least one example of firing Mike Shula paying off big-time. No doubt that hiring another OC would do the same, but Rivera is still the biggest problem.

Ask a Dolphins fan about Saban...

He was pretty clear about not wanting / hoping / advocating Saban as our coach.  Right?  It's in the first line of his post...and what he did in Miami isn't relevant without that.  The post was fair and the point being made is valid (if maybe a little narrow considering all the things that go into a football team being good)...the quality of a coach matters.  Replacing a poor one with a good one makes a huge difference.

Noone is denying that Saban is a douche or that he fuged the Dolphins without the benefit of a courtesy reach-around.  It's undeniable, though, that Saban is a better college coach than Shula and that he was an upgrade in Alabama.  He remains a good example of an upgrade to the coach being an immediate impact.

His merits as an NFL coach (or even a decent person) just kinda don't matter in this situation.

What an irrelevant post unless the topic was how coaches can do well in college and suck in the NFL. Or that guys who suck in the pros might do better as a college coach so if Shula gets fired he should go back to college and he might do better.

Sure Saban replaced,Shula and did well in college so Shula wasn't a great college head coach. And maybe he isn't a great OC but there were a ton of better comparisons where a guy comes in and improves the offense as an OC replacing someone who struggled.

On the other hand is our situation not pretty unique. I can't remember a time when a team went 12-4 and won their division and then was almost totally dismantled personnel wise. There have been Super Bowl teams that suffered the following year after guys wanted big pay checks and left. But honestly looking at all the starters we lost has there been a time when a team has done what Gettleman did to us. I am sure there must have been but I can think of it off the top of my head.

How is that related? Both Rivera and Shula have been blamed for the mess we are in yet who would be winning with this train wreck?

In,our own history perhaps we could look at what happened in 2003 and then again in 2004 where we lost so many starters to injury. Sure we didn't lose everyone to leaving but the effect was the same. Guys who were starting were backups who replaced guys who weren't there. Then again I don't remember our coaches getting blamed for the problems in 2004. So why is Rivera and Shula getting all the heat for what was obviously Gettlemans failure to keep the team competitive?

What year did Shula leave TB? without googling, your theory suggests either 2k or 2001..

Another nail in the coffin, perhaps. Its known that he isnt very good, but can we know it any more? Just more misery to revel in...

We even have his next up waiting in the wings. Or... Could Ramsdell's influence this year be part of the reason?

Can it just be the O-line & playcalling?

edit:it was '99.........
