Breaking down that 4th & 1 play..

Gucci Mane

Also, anyone who says Avant was primary receiver doesn't know what they are talking about.

He was probably the 4th progression and we had a WR one on one with I think a LB (Connor Barwin maybe?) which was likely third progression and what most would consider a good match up and is probably why the ball went there.

Progression was likely:

Benji

Olsen

Cotchery

Avant

Stewart

You don't really get to go through progressions and then go back and decide.  You go through progressions and make decision on each one.

So if third progression is a WR on a LB you have to decide.

Playing QB is about making good decisions, they don't always have to be perfect decisions.  You can play these games with anyone on film or with still frames.

If he threw a TD to Cotchery would we even be looking at these frames?

Anybody who can't see Cam is at fault on this play is delusional.

Avant is clearly wide open. Newton didn't make the correct read.

Shula sucks plain and simple, but Cam does him little favors with reads like this. The oline does both little favors by getting walked back on every play. Our offense is a dumpster fire plain and simple. The likes that have not been seen around here since David Carr and jimmy clausen were at the helm.

Agreed.   Shula/Rivera certainly made their share of bad calls, and maybe we shouldn't have lined up in the shotgun, but there were several options on this play, and Cam made the worst choice, the one with the least chance of succeeding.

Since it was really closer to 4th and 2, I understand why they didn't sneak it.

i cant get past the fact there was decent protection and a pocket. as for the 3 deep routes the only way they make sense in this circumstance is if they can clear out an easy underneath pass. that kinda worked and there were options especially to Stewart but i guess Cam felt more comfortable trying to make the tougher pass. he also had an easy run for a first.

Your theory as to the likely sequence of progressions is based on what??? The fact that you think Cam needs to force the ball deep to Benjamin on 4th and 2??? Go back and watch the play. Watch Newton's head. He was looking at Avant first the entire way until he decides to ignore the fact that Avant was wide open.

Avant has to be the primary receiver on this play because his route is the quickest developing one. Cam is looking right at him. Avant is looking for the ball. That was the play. It is hard to imagine how Avant could have been any more wide open in that situation.

Is there any video of this play?

That would probably serve this thread better than claiming a player is "wide open" only by looking at one picture out of an entire play.

You really need to invest $29.99 for NFL rewind, my Crimson friend.

It will broaden your horizon's significantly.

    • Cam is the GOAT dual threat, but we've never been able to have back to back seasons with winning records despite the late season surge winning streaks, my favorite being the year we won the south in the 2nd half of the season. But winning 2 games late in the year against bad teams doesn't establish a "winning culture"  If they beat the Falcons bucs once, competitive against the chiefs and eagles i will have no problem with wins then because it's against legitimate competition but beating the giants and saints just to feel good, hard pass.
