Ron Rivera's Coaching Hires (and Fires)

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Some of the highlights...

- Hired Rob Chudzinski as his offensive coordinator; Chudzinski's prior experience as an OC had been less than stellar; lost Chudzinski and assistant Scott Turner to the Browns two years later

- Reportedly tried to lure old mentor Norv Turner to run the offense in the wake of Chudzinski's deperture; Turner instead joined the Vikings

- Originally wanted Steve Wilks as his defensive coordinator; went with Sean McDermott instead when the Chargers denied permission to interview Wilks and McDermott was fired by the Eagles

- Hired Wilks as defensive backs coach a year later when his contract was up, parting ways with Ron Meeks

- Replaced Chudzinski with Mike Shula, passing over Hue Jackson (who coordinated the Bengal offense against us a few weeks ago) and Pat Shurmur (who ran the Eagles offense last night)

- Backfilled the QB Coach position with Ken Dorsey who at the time was working for the panthers as a scout; prior to that Shula was an assistant trainer at IMG where he helped train Cam Newton

- Later hired well known QB Coach John Ramsdell as an "offensive assistant" ; per Zod, Ramsdell is rarely part of the practices

- Let Jim Skipper walk in favor of Wisconsin RB Coach John Settle; picked Skipper back up after firing Settle two years later

- Let go of Fred Graves in favor of Ricky Proehl; Graves is now with the Chargers and is credited with overseeing the development of Keenan Allen while Proehl is mentoring Kelvin Benjamin

- Hired Warren Belin to coach linebackers; fired Belin after he tutored Luke Kuechly to a rookie of the year campaign and replaced him with Al Holcomb

- Hired Brian Murphy as special teams coach after Murphy was coming off a bad season; replaced him a year later with old college teammate Richard Rodgers, who had never coached in the NFL

- Hired longtime (and well known) ST Coach Bruce DeHaven as an assistant to Rodgers (rather than the other way around)

- Hired John Matsko as offensive line coach after the Ravens had fired him

- Hired Pete Hoener and Eric Washington, both of whom have generally been credited with coaching good units (though Washington's unit has slipped some this year)

And JR approved it all.
