Is Ken Dorsey a worse quarterback coach than we've all given him credit for?

I'm not standing on one side of it or another, just tossing it out there for discussion. I think there are a million other problems with this offense that are clearly bigger factors in our failures - particularly Mike Shula, Ron Rivera, and the echelon of lawn gnomes we have out there at offensive line - but it's worth considering. Cam improved from year to year under the tutelage of Shula as a position coach, but he's completely breaking down, losing his fundamentals.

Does Dorsey have anything to do with this?

Moreover, if you burn it all down in the offseason, do you cut him loose? We all know Cam being comfortable was one of the main considerations for hanging onto certain guys, but do you really want your guy being comfortable after two horrific offensive campaigns in a row?

I can't help but think Gettleman needs to pick a new coach, and the new coach needs to be given the freedom to select his own position coaches. No sacred cows.

I think Cam's problems this season stem mainly from two things:

A) Injured ankle (and somewhat his ribs)

B) Getting hit more and more due to shitty offensive line, which leads to more nagging little injuries and no confidence that he's not going to get hit on any given play.

I think those to things have combined to seriously degrade his performance.  Now, is coaching an issue?  Possibly.

I don't think Cam's woes fall on Dorsey.

I put the blame on his injuries, lack of protection, and the apparent lack of WR's abilities to get open.

Seeing Sanchez last night affirms that the OC must go. If Mark can have that kind of success, then there's no motherfackin reason couldn't be exponentially more successful in a similar system.

His runs are worse than we know. He's still wearing that best that covers his entire chest and abdomen.

If there were a guide on how not to develop a #1 overall pick, our organization has been following it pretty precisely.

Basically a perfect mixture of poor coaching hires, terrible drafting offensively, and a losing culture deeply ingrained within the franchise.

Don't forget that Sanchez was a top 5 draft pick. The kid can play. He probably could have used another year in college before declaring for the draft, but he can play. Sanchez had to deal with an inept coach in NY, similar to what Cam is dealing with now.

Hard to blame Rivera though. This is his job, his livelihood. This is how he provides for his family. He can't just go all rebel against everyone. He needs to play the game to survive. This team needs an established offensive-minded HC that will call bull when bull is there. Ron just can't do that yet. This is his first HC gig.

He had never been a coach before in any form when we hired him.

I mean, really?

From his Panthers bio (link)

Dorsey took over as quarterbacks coach in 2013 following two seasons as a pro scout for Carolina from 2011-12. In this role, Dorsey advanced the Panthers' upcoming opponents each week as well as evaluated free agents and prospects on other NFL rosters.

Prior to coming to Carolina, Dorsey served as an instructor at IMG Academy. He helped train NFL prospects before the 2011 NFL Draft, working with quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers.

Newton was apparently one of the prospects he worked with.

People have suggested before that we should hire a 'consultant' type like Chris Weinke or George Whitfield as a QB coach.

Turns out we did.

Trusting such a long term investment (#1 overall pick) to that sort of hire is simply absurd.

Quite frankly we hired him because he was dirt cheap. Call it what it is.

Same thing with the other hires. Guys who were either passed over numerous times, fired, or had been demoted.

We don't take chances. We go for the safe cheap and easy hires, and these are the results that we keep getting.

You remember who hires the coaches right?

I'm not really sure this should come as a surprise.
