He was coming off a major injury which is why he retired. He didn't retire to go elsewhere. Cincinnatti wouldn't sign him long term due to his heath concerns and he wouldn't play for what they were offering so he retired. But it wasn't a strategy to avoid playing as you suggest. Most folks thought Palmer was washed up. if they had paid him what he wanted he would still be there.

No, his injury happened in 2005. He actually went to the playoffs in 2010 and retired in 2011. Before retiring he requested a trade. The owner wouldn't allow it.
