If we don't resign Cam

It will be the biggest mistake this franchise will ever make. Just for the record. This guy is a stud and can be the a top 3-5 QB in the league for years to come with a good surrounding cast. If we don't resign cam newton then I have no faith in anybody in the front office in carolina. #ResignCam

That's if Cam wants to resign with the Panthers.

Would you if you were him!? :startle:

Don't listen to the whiners or haterz.

It's a two way street. And Newton has to want to sign here. And based off what we seen from both the coaching staff and front office, you could be a little sympatetic to Newton if he did want to leave.

Trust me, Newton has more leverage in this situation than the Newton haterz want to believe or realize.

If I was him (unless things change drastically, including Rivera's firing and hiring a competent HC and OC), I'd bolt! :sword:

If he holds out.... Jerry Jones jet would be in Charlotte before the sun sets on the first day of the holdout trying to work out a sign and trade to bring him to the Big D

Holding out is only for more money not to go elsewhere.  When has any quarterback actually sat out a year so he could go elsewhere, ever?  Why keep going on and on.  It has never happened and won't in this case either.  If Cam isn't here it will be because we traded him or didn't resign him not because he left on his own.

Yeah you could almost make the argument we're not in position to pay Cam right now. We have some many holes on this team is pathetic. This has nothing to do with Cam and more to do with the way this organization had handled the past 4 seasons. I'm not sure this organization has any idea how to build around a QB.

We would have no problem signing Cam to a long term deal if we want to. Usually in year 1 and year 2 the cap cost is low given that he got a big signing bonus so salary.  Unless we are going to go the rookie route again any decent guy would cost about the same really.

It is up the Panthers and not Cam. If he doesn't resign voluntarily and we decide to keep him all we have to do is franchise him in year 6 and 7. At that point he is over 30 and isn't guaranteed a big contract anywhere based on what he has done so far which is 1 winning season and no playoffs wins. He might have great talent but that only gets you so far.

Again how many franchise quarterbacks have ever gone to free agency? At the lest we would franchise him and trade him. He certainly won't walk and have things on his terms.

Stop posting emotionally and start looking at the facts here.

Ever heard of holding out?

Again has any quarterback ever held out and refused to sing either his franchise tag or a long term contract??  And if he did plan on doing that or we thought he might we would trade him for a couple of 1s.  So he goes where we send him or he signs here.  Exactly how is in control of anything?  You say don't listen to the haters while I say don't listen to the nuthuggers either. .

He has no leverage to do that, none at all.

For the next three years at the very least, if the Panthers want him here, he's here.

That's sad for him, I don't want him to go but if the team is not gonna put him in a position to succeed that's some BS. Damn now I'm depressed!

It's not up to the Panthers- all they can do is make an offer to Cam, and that is not a foregone conclusion.

Cam Newton would be a complete idiot and his agent should be decertified by the NFLPA if he doesn't listen to offers from other teams.

I'm saying if we don't offer him the big deal he deserves (100+ mil)

Carson Palmer retired to get out of Cincinnati. Cam could too if he really wanted to leave Carolina sooner than later.

No emotion here - I have no attachment to the Panthers at all and I'm not the one with the team name as my username.

The first rule of using the franchise tag: do not tag him unless you're willing to pay him that amount to begin with. You might want to take a look and see what free agent QBs are going to be out there when Cam hits the market and decide whether you're going to allow this team to ante up $20+M. Hell, Cleveland is already talking about $18M for Brian Hoyer.

He was coming off a major injury which is why he retired.  He didn't retire to go elsewhere. Cincinnatti wouldn't sign him long term due to his heath concerns and he wouldn't play for what they were offering so he retired.  But it wasn't a strategy to avoid playing as you suggest.  Most folks thought Palmer was washed up. if they had paid him what he wanted he would still be there.
