If we don't resign Cam

It's not up to the Panthers- all they can do is make an offer to Cam, and that is not a foregone conclusion.

Cam Newton would be a complete idiot and his agent should be decertified by the NFLPA if he doesn't listen to offers from other teams.

It is up the Panthers and not Cam.  If he doesn't resign voluntarily and we decide to keep him all we have to do is franchise him in year 6 and 7.  At that point he is over 30 and isn't guaranteed a big contract anywhere based on what he has done so far which is 1 winning season and no playoffs wins.  He might have great talent but that only gets you so far.

Again how many franchise quarterbacks have ever gone to free agency?  At the lest we would franchise him and trade him.  He certainly won't walk and have things on his terms.

Stop posting emotionally and start looking at the facts here.

Cam is 25. We could franchise him year 6 and 7 and he'd be 29 hitting FA.

and he will 30 - 2 months later in May.  He would be crazy to play on one year contracts for multiple years and risk injury instead of signing long term.  Particularly when he is having injury problems already.

He won't turn 26 till may, he'll be 26 for his entire 5th year. 27 for his 6th and 28 for his 7th. He'll just be turning 29 when he hits FA. That year makes a big difference especially because it puts him on the better side of 30

Yeah you seem right on the age, he will 29 when he could be eligible for free agency assuming we don't franchise him once again which would still be cheaper than signing his long term.  Still it isn't that big of a difference unless he has played well over the past year or two and why wouldn't he sign long term if things are working out.  Think about it for a minute. If we are winning then he would take the money and play.  If he is not playing well or we are not winning, why would any team pay huge bucks for a guy who doesn't have a winning record or playoff wins.  Many folks around the league love his athleticism but question his football acumen and inaccuracy for example.

there is this thing called a holdout.... His agent would be a fool to allow his client to keep signing for high one year deals. If Breesus can holdout

then I would expect Cam to as well

Cam doesn't have a super bowl ring like Brees did.  And he really hasn't proven himself.  So he is not in nearly as good a position as Brees.  Plus if he holds out it only huts him.  Look at how not being at camp and the preseason hurt him this year.

Yeah you could almost make the argument we're not in position to pay Cam right now. We have some many holes on this team is pathetic. This has nothing to do with Cam and more to do with the way this organization had handled the past 4 seasons. I'm not sure this organization has any idea how to build around a QB.
