Hello, i want to play a game.

I want to know what your fix is, in your opinion, about the DT situation. How many guys should we try to get? One? Two? Should we trade for a player or wait?

I'll post my fix...

1. Trade for Randy Starks (Miami)

Could get him at a nice discount from that whole incident that got dropped a few months ago. Maybe a 4th or 5th rounder should do it. He's on the depth chart for the Fins as a DT, however he played in Tennessee at DT and produced pretty well, plus he's only 25.

2. Sign Dewayne Robertson

Pick him up on the cheap, and he'll split time with one of the starters (i don't see him taking on a full time role, he'd be more effective rotating). A nice plus is if Kemo comes back next year, we've got 4 pretty good guys on the roster already.

Nice post. Ha. I'm still very intrigued by Gantt's suggestion we go for Glen Dorsey. Not too long ago, he was considered one of the most dominating DT's ever to come out. He's big and athletic and we would have guys around him....if not, I say Robertson-based solely on his size...

I agree with you to an extent...

1) They have got to trade for a starting caliber DT. I really like Corey Williams from the Browns and I think he would be a perfect fit that we could get for a 4th round pick. He could start right away as soon as he gets reacclimated to the 4-3 style of defense.

2) After the cuts we need to find a guy who can add solid depth. This is what we should have done during the offseason but are hands were tied with Peppers. I like that kid from the Giants Jay Alford 6-3 304 and a guy from the Titans Vickerson 6-5 305. Both may not get cut but they are right on the line and either one would be perfect for us.

If we could get this accomplished or something like it we would have three pretty good players at the DT spot with Irvin and Favorite fighting out for the 4th spot (Irvin would get it based on draft status) and although its unlikely we could keep 5 to keep these guys fresh. I think Hayden is as good as gone.

Thats what I would do, but what will happen is the Panthers will wait and get someone that has been cut. I think the guys reporting that "help is on the way" have no clue what they are talking about and are merely assuming as to what will happen.

1) Sign Dewayne Robertson. We can get the guy dirt cheap and if he flops, just cut him and we don't lose anything. You can't tell me the very worst UDFA we have isn't worth dropping to bring this guy in. Seems like a no brainer to me.

2) Trade a 4th or 5th for Corey Williams. Played very well in a 4-3 but is out of position in Cleveland so we should get him for relatively cheap.

3) Cut Nick Hayden NOW. Give reps to the guys that actually belong on an NFL team and send a message to everyone at the same time.

4) Wait for team cuts. There should be a couple solid DTs there we can add for depth.

I still don't understand why we haven't signed Dewayne Robertson. We can get the guy dirt cheap and if he flops, just cut him and we don't lose anything. You can't tell me the very worst UDFA we have isn't worth dropping to bring this guy in. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Cause he is another 1 gap DT. Why everyone wants Williams is because he can play the 2 gap or otherwise known as the space eater role in the 4-3.

the fact that we havent signed him by now, nor has any other team leads me to believe theres a good reason that he remains a free agent that people such as ourselves are not privleged enough to know...

As far as trading for someoneone i really wouldnt mind trading for corey williams and would offer as a much as 4th if need be. i'd take dorsey to for as much as 2 third rounders

3. 5-man D-line

I was thinking about that but I'm not sure how willing fox would be to do that. It could potentially be a 3-4/4-3 hybrid if you put Peppers or Brown/Charles Johnson on the edge with Lewis, Favorite and Brayton/Irvin inside. But that would be a different scheme and could still get run on by a good power running team. Would be a nice pass rush though.

I think we have to get a starting caliber DT, no scrub. Get Corey Williams, and pick up one of the Titans or Giants cuts and I think we are good to go. Favorite and Irvin look like nice back ups from what we've seen. Next year may have to go and get another DT because I'm not sure Kemo will be able to come back from a torn ACL at his size.

dewayne robertson and vonnie holliday. good bit of experience there and if we jiggle the cap around a little we could probably afford them.

i would also be keeping an eye on some of the teams transitioning to a 3-4 like KC, Denver, and GB. ok, maybe not denver but there are some intriguing possibilities from these two teams with players who may not translate well into their new scheme.

in KC i might be keeping an eye on ron edwards and alphonso boone. noth are pretty good against the run and were used in a 2--5-4 formation in preseason. this year. actually the chiefs ran that 3 times (on passing downs, of course) and edwards was involved in all 3 of them. he was paired up with tyson jackson for 2 of them and boone for the third one. boone might be the most disposable of all of them. dorsey would be too much of a pain to acquire but would be great if we could. they are in need of a WR, esp. since they are having problems with Bowe so one of young ones might be attractive for them to help with any trades.

in green bay i like a couple that they have at DT who might be a little easy to get as well. i would like ryan pickett but they may need his big butt to help as raji leanrs the ropes. another couple i like are johnny jolly and justin harrell. harrell would likely be a low risk/high reward type because of his back problems and the uncertainty there. that uncertainty cuold mean a very friendly price tag and contract situation. GB's really hoping that he gets things worked out with his back and are investing a lot but they are going to have to cut their losses at some point. one of those three, though, will likely be easy to move and a draft pick/LB/WR or some combination might do the trick.
