A Current Job Horror Story and a Question For Those in the IT Field...

You any good at sales?

Yes, but thats why I'm looking at the IT stuff bc I want to get away from that corporate culture as a whole. I know sales can be lucrative and I've had success with it in the past on a smaller scale (shoes sales), but I want to ultimately limit the amount of elbow rubbing I have to do.

No, I knew you meant "you can do better" in the litera, ethical sense. So my next response was making light of that by escalating the amount of unethical resume building.

what is your management structure like? is it like manager on duty then supervisor on duty that report to one main supervisor?

i'm talking about taking that poo to the top. let that top supervisor know how good you are not by talking, but doing the right thing all the time regardless what is happening around you so you can get a LOR from her/him and even if you move on to a different field that letter will have power because it will be some one attesting to your character. more than anything employers want somebody they can trust.

my first real job out of college i ended up with two LOR from regional supervisors and i literally can get a job doing what i do anywhere because of it. You have no idea what kind of power those things hold when you get somebody who makes 250k a year signing their stamp of approval on you.

thats why i'm afraid you might be in a situation where that will literally be impossible now simply because you don't show up on time, multiple times. Something so easy and of course dumb but that's the way the world works. a couple things i was taught that have helped. keep your mouth shut, be dependable, stay out of politics, give extra effort and be that go-to-guy.

each job you take in your career is a building block. i think you just kicked this one off the cliff.

You can get outside of the corporate culture pretty quick in sales but not shoe sales obviously. Good salesmen who drive revenue do whatever they want frankly.

IT isn't going to magically get you out of corporate culture.

Your whole view of corporate life is really skewed.

Reading this makes me realize I have it fairly lucky in some ways.  My manager doesn't really care what time I get to work, or what time I leave for that matter, as long as the work gets done.  But then, I rarely ever see my manager, and mostly communicate via IM.    I do have to be on time for any meetings that are scheduled though.  Of course, the price for that is I end up working a lot of late hours since we are a worldwide company.  Last week I went in to the office every day around 8:30 am, left between 3:30 and 4, but connected via remote access Tuesday and wed night working from 9-12 or so.  Got to admit I love the hours though.  They are perfect for me.

I know it's not a magic cure to corporate culture ails. I overstated it, but my point is there would be less of the stuff I hate in my current position in terms of dealing with people and how much you have to interact with them, period. To me, the key is having a skill that makes me valuable and not just another number. That's all I'm getting at.
