Report: Greg Hardy's Panthers career likely over

Most mid level FAs are going to expect deals that are longer then one year. So while the one year cost might be less then 13m the overal

l commitment would be more.

Also there is no way to know sure if we wouldn't have signed or traded him. I know some have reported that we never intended to but as we all know a lot of misinformation gets put out by teams.

So what's wrong with a multi-year deal? Gentleman made his chops as a pro personell guy and now we shoudn't trust him to make good signings? Four million a year as a cap hit buys you a decent player. Instead, we settle for a 2 year deal for Harper.

It's just very hard to figure out the Panther's overall long term strategy.

We won't be a consistent winner until we get rid of our puritanical sensibilities... JR said he isn't a choir boy and doesn't want choir boys, show me.

there's a difference between not being a choir boy and consistently making stupid choices in regards to lifestyle, actions, wnd the company you keep.

hou don't invest long term in a guy who refuses to use any self control over his life and, instead chooses to put himself into the situations he does.

Count me in among those who hated like hell the idea of using $13.1M in cap space when we were already dealing with limited space for a 1 year rental of Hardy. If we were using it to continue negotiations then fine, but it always seemed like it was going to be nothing more than a 1 year rental and that was dumb.

That's the thing I've always had an issue with and it has nothing to do with hindsight.

After the Peppers debacle, my philosophy is, use the tag to extend negotiations if both sides want a long-term deal or get value in return for the player you tag via trade.  If using the tag doesn't fall under those two options, you don't use it, PERIOD.

That was stupid of Gettleman.  Jeremy has said almost immediately since after the tag was placed that Hardy was not in the long-term plans, so I still don't understand the reasoning behind it.  And I don't buy the "was planning to make a one-year run to the Superbowl" after he gutted the team of so many valuable starters.  It just doesn't make sense...

Exactly.  It would've been one thing if we thought this season was our year to make a legitimate run at the title, but Gettleman seemed to be setting the expectation that we're still 1-2 years away.  That being the case, I didn't understand tagging him since the indication was that the Panthers had made their best long-term offer and that further long-term negotiations were essentially off the table.  We essentially spent $13.1M of cap space for a one year rental on a player who isn't going to be here long-term and who was unlikely to contribute in a potential title run.  There's no way Gettleman thought we were competing for a Super Bowl with this OL.  I just can't imagine that.

Like someone else said, I would've rather used some of that money to sign a some mid-level FAs and rollover the rest.

Understand, but most of the stuff Hardy has done up to this point I would classify as immature and/or foolish but not "criminal" in the sense of him being a bad apple. Part of the maturing process is developing good sense for the kind of people you keep company with and I'm sure this has been a learning experience for him.

We took a risk on Smitty more than once, when he tried to wipe the nose off two of his teammates faces. Yes those incidents happened within the confines of the team, but there wasn't any reason to believe it couldn't happen on the street some day.

I know you have to be very careful about making a significant long-term investment in someone like this, but the risk of losing his talent should also be very carefully considered... there aren't too many people walking the face of the Earth that are capable of producing a 15 sack season in the NFL and he's just coming into his prime.

The Panthers would love to get any production for their 13 mil this season, but there won't be a contract for future seasons.

Of course you know how much I respect what you do for us here and appreciate the knowledge you bring to this board...but I hope this prediction goes the way of the Terre McClain pro bowl prediction.
