Some Clarifications on the Quest for an Interior Line

These are a few things that have been brought up, but I wanted to put in one place:

1. Player for player trades are rare. Starter for starter trades are almost non existant - Quick. Without searching name 3 player for player trades in the last 5 years. I can't do it. I know that much.

If/When we trade for a DT, you are almost guaranteed to see "----- (DT) traded to Carolina for undisclosed draft considerations" come across the bottom of your TV.

The NFL has a powerful and complex salary cap, has no real farm system and has very specialized positions. This all combined makes it very tricky to trade one player for another.

2. We can fit almost any one player under the cap - Daniel Snyder would go mad if this wasn't true. This doesn't mean the process is painless. Believe it or not, the Skins didn't stop taking cap hits for Deon Sanders till a few years ago.

It would take quite a bit of work and would restrict us for years to come, but if we wanted, we could just about sign Albert Haynesworth.

3. Scheme can mask mediocre talent, but it cannot hide a lack of talent (and fundelmentals) - Simply put, if Nick Hayden gets pushed back 10 yards on every play and your secondary can't tackle, no plan in the world will save you.

NE cobbled together some pretty blah secondaries to win championships, but guys like Gay were of at least starter quality (and guys like Samuel were certainly better than that).

4. Carolina doesn't run the draw all that often - Nothing to do with DT obviously. Only 2 other teams (Cleveland and Houston) ran the play less last year. Please stop snarking otherwise.

While I don't see us trading a starter, I can see us shipping a draft pick along with a "throw in" player. Someone that we don't need and might get cut anyway, like Dante Rosario or Hilee Taylor.

Delhommey and RR, lets add another point to this list, you can't use players that you don't want as trade bait. Putting up Hayden as a trade option is just stupid and saw that suggested in a thread. With that being said what players do we currently have on roster that have trade value? They are going to have to have regular season playing experience and probably be younger although that might not be a definent.

Dante Rosario: Has a lot of playing time and probably the most known younger player on the roster that could be tradable after the SD touchdown catch last year.

Hilee Taylor: Got some playing time last year and also brings the option of playing a OLB in a 3-4.

Charles Johnson: I don't know if I would be willing to trade him but he would have the best stats of anyone else. And if the team plans on keeping both Brown and Peppers for the long term could we end up losing him anyway in a couple of years.

Na'il Diggs: Not a younger player by any means but has been a solid player in both Green Bay and Carolina. He will never make the Pro-Bowl but has proven is hard to unseat as a starter which says a lot with this group of young LBers.

Landon Johnson: His stock has really fallen after last season but he will have some worth I would think. His ability to play all three LBing spots helps a lot.

CJ Wilson: IMO this is the deepest position on the team and one of these guys is going to have to get cut that I don't think anyone wants to get cut. With Marshall and Gamble as starters and Martin and Munnerlyn rookies that only leaves Wilson and Wesley as the only options. However, Wesley pretty much came crawling back to Carolina and his age is getting up there so Wilson is the ony one left that I think you have any value. While he does have playing time it's not a lot and out of all the possible option is the most unknown outside of Carolina.

John Kasey/Ryhes Lloyd: This one could go either way. Lloyd has youth but Kasey has the records. We all know that having two kickers is a luxery but this one is probably the most unlikely.

Any others?

Since Cleveland was/is a rumor, lets play with trade options here:

Hilee Taylor and Dante Rosario (maybe some draft considerations) for Corey Williams. Williams is a struggling player as a DE in the 3-4 and would work better as a DT in a 4-3. Taylor would be much more flexible in a 3-4 scheme, plus he already knows the posistion well. Rosario managed to have very similar production last year than Cleveland's top TE did with much fewer catches. He would provide at least some decent competition in the TE ranks in Cleveland.

Not the craziest thing I've ever said...ah what am I saying? It'll never happen.

How is Cleveland's CB depth looking. I don't follow the Browns at all so I have no idea. I would rather give up a CB or LB than a DE but none of our LBers fit into a 3-4 defense. If losing Taylor is what it would take to get Williams I would be okay with it.
