Former 1st round OT released

If he is a vested veteran he's released, not waived.  Free to sign with anyone.

A Mississippi State product, Sherrod (6-6, 321) is subject to waivers. He’s slated to be paid $1.275 million in salary this season, per Rotoworld data, making a waiver claim a potential long shot. He is the final year of his deal, as the Packers did not exercise an option to extend his contract this offseason.

Yea, article on PFT or somewhere said he's unlikely to be claimed on waivers because of his $1.something mil contract.  Seriously?  If he has ANY potential, sign him yesterday.  Last year of his contract, so if we grab him and he looks like he *could possibly* turn into something we can sign him to a low contract and hope we got lucky.  If not, cut his ass.  At this point, contract isn't guaranteed anyway.

He's definitely worth a look.  I don't think he'd be our future LT, but I think he has the potential to be a RT.  If he turns out to be even respectable, and we go after LT in the first round of the draft, the line could be, well, not terrible.  Norwell/Khalil/Turner are a decent middle of the line, just need Tackles.

I do not think it is this years salary as the fact that the contract expires that is the problem. If you take a flyer on a guy with that history you want him long (longer) term if he all of a sudden lives up to the potential.

So let him clear waivers and sign him to a 2-3 year contract with minimum this year and about a $1M year 2 and 3 (nothing of it guaranteed). Throw in a ~$70K roster bonus this summer and he should sign if he is smart as it could be the last train.
