The importance of going into the Bye week 5-5-1

I didn't say they needed to "lay down." I said I'd rather draft the best LT in the draft than finish close to .500 and miss the playoffs or squeak in just to lose in the 1st round. The best LT is more valuable than a few victories in another wasted season.

Get it but

1. What is the ideal position to finish the season so you can draft said left tackle.

2. Whatever position we finish in how do you know an LT Is tops on the big board?

3. Who is the "best LT" and how do you know he will be better than anyone one the team given the bust rate?

Just trying to understand in real terms what windmill you are chasing.

Questions 3 is not an "understanding" question, so I'll ignore it.

If LT is not on the top of Gettleman's board, then it'll be business as usual, since protecting Cam Newton is not a priority of Gettleman's. LT is probably the 2nd most important player on an NFL team these days (since most QBs are right-handed). If the Panthers end up with a top 5 - 10 pick and don't take the best LT available, then Cam Newton should ask for a trade or hold out.

IN THEORY, whoever the Panthers draft at OT should be better than every tackle currently on the team since the ones that are are all "undrafted." Whether they end up being is irrelevant. They should still draft one.

I generally hate the idea of drafting for need, but this OL situation has damn near forced us into doing just that.  You simply can't compete with this level of OL play.

Unless some OTs are added via free agency, we absolutely HAVE to find day one impact OTs in the draft.  Bell and Chandler aren't even close to being the answer.  Hell, most teams would be looking to upgrade those spots on the roster if they were their backups.
