Opinions: Can they fix this team in one off season?

If we have a losing season again this year then I think the coaching staff needs to be replaced and not just Shula. Hire the right staff and we could be like the 49ers when Harbaugh came in.

Yes if we land a LT in the draft.

1. Franchise LT

2. Offensive Coordinator

3. Speedy WR threat / Kick Returner

4. Safety

5. CB

6. DE

The first three would make this team instantly competitive for the Super Bowl. The new rules favor offenses over defenses, new coordinator + give Cam time to throw and a speedy WR like Ginn and you'll instantly see a 180 with this offense. Imagine a combo of Brandon Scherff and Stefon Diggs in the draft, instant speedster and LT.

Year after year we're having another disappointing season and this question gets asked on here. Year after year Huddlers say how close we are and say we're just one or two players away. Year after year we get pumped for preseason after we convince ourselves we've had a good offseason. Year after year we're having another disappointing season and this question gets asked on here. I see things playing out like this:

-Assuming DeCoud, Alexander, and Kugbila are cut then the team will have roughly 25mil in cap space based on 145mil salary cap.

-The team will have 17 vacancies to fill, nobody of importance with the exception of Hardy.

-I see DG pushing 5mil of CJ's base to 2016 guaranteed money, that potentially brings the cap space to around 30mil.

-I'm predicting that we will see Dwill become a June 1st cut, his cap hit and dead money are about even, so the space created will just rollover to the following year to cover the dead money.

-We have about 7 mil rollover....giving us 37mil in cap space with 18 vacancies.

Onto personnel moves:

-Next year's T FA crop sucks, G is descent though.

-Only name I see that is within reason of signing at LT is King Dunlap. Slight improvement?

-I suspect we should prepare to see T signing of

King Dunlap

Byron Bell

Lesser known RT FA (britton, mike Johnson, etc)

-I'm certain you will see a hard push at signing JPP or Hardy.

-I think we will all be surprised by the signing of a higher end WR to replace Avant.(Crabtree?)

-Dwan Edwards will be brought back on a one year deal.

-Kendrick Ellis is signed to replace Colin Cole

-We will see a Safety and CB signing. Mid-Level signing.

Overall, we become a bigger player in FA while still retaining 7-8 of our own FA.

Draft:

-2nd or 3rd will be spent on an RB.(Gordon or Coleman)

-a DE will be drafted

-a double down of Tackles will happen

-we actually draft a TE

-UDFA signings will consist mostly of offensive linemen. Camp will be hell for OL

We don't even need to get all pros at every position of deficiency.  Our WR corps would be sufficient if our OL play was.  If we can find a way to keep Hardy, we can keep patching the secondary.  There's a lot of ifs, but it can be done.  It all starts with the coaching change though.  Everything would be in vain if Scared Ron and Shula are still running things.

We don't need to completely overhaul the receiving core, but we definitely lack speed there.

And I hate to break it to you guys.....I strongly doubt Ron is going anywhere.  I'll be happy with Shula gone.

There will be another large purge of this roster next year. The one year rentals will be gone. Some vet players will be gone due to salary issues. They probably couldn't afford Hardy regardless of his legal problems and playing status. The holes on this team are numerous and glaring. One draft will not cover all the needs. According to the cap guru's on the Huddle, they are still in dire straights untill at least 2016. So what's the answer? Two more years of medocrity or worse? How can they fix this mess next offseason?

no because more than one has passed since it needed fixing.

Yea, I agree.  We definitely need some more speed.  I said a few days ago, I think the only WR that should be safe for next year is KB.  BUT, if our OL was competent our WR right now would be sufficient.  We were I think a top 10 passing offense for a while.

I'm more interested in whether they can fix this season

Short answer is no, we can't, to both this comment and the OP's question.

Next offseason will set us up for the next 4-5 years.  Clearing even more bad contracts off the books is a must, and that can't happen until the following offseason, but it will be better next year.
