Hot food from gas stations...

Hotsauce

Recommended Posts

A few years ago, I was working in San Antonio.  One of the locals took a group of us for some real Texas bbq.  It was in the back of a gas station/convenience store.  I had creamed corn and brisket.  I am not really a fan of Texas style, but all in all, it wasn't bad.  And the creamed corn was very good.

And I was able to fill up the rental car afterwards.

I felt brave at Wawa once.

They had a touch screen kiosk to order fresh-made sammiches .

I ordered once, nobody ever showed up to make a sammich, so I went with a rolling hotdog.

The experience was the opposite of PhillyB... whatever they had in the bread prevented the shat for about 3 days.

There was a gas station by my home growing up that I would stop at and my mom would get potato wedges from there every now and then as a treat.  They were fresh and cut there at the store.  I used to love the skin on them...  Delicious.  And there was another gas station I would stop at when I went with my friend to church that served these huge, hearty breakfast biscuits.  You could tell they got the meat locally...  I got a sausage link biscuit with egg and cheese...  O.M.G...  It was banging.  But, those were the only two places I would get "hot food" from as far as gas stations/convenience stores go.

But, even then, the older I got, I stopped eating at them altogether.  I just imagined the workers had just been outside changing trash and/or cleaning the bathrooms and then immediately would go back and make the food.  I doubt they did...  I'm sure they were strictly kitchen staff and clerks did the rest, but still...  I'm with Jase though, I would not eat at a Subway in a gas station EVER.

I've heard Sheetz is good, and I have thought about giving them a chance because I know they have employees designated strictly for food making and everytime I've been in my local Sheetz, they are wearing gloves and everything seems really clean there.  It actually operates as a legitimate restaurant and several people have told me their food is really good...  I just don't eat out much anymore.
