Rivera: " couldn't find a left tackle to fit what we do"?

I think Rivera was basically saying that the Panthers didn't have the money to sign a quality LT so with the money they had to spend "they could not find a LT that fit what we do".

BTW:  If Amini was any good at LT, he would have been the starter instead of Bell. Amini was another 2nd round 'reach' made by Hurney.

Don't you mean Beane?

Hurney was fired during the season.

If you weren't going to field a team that could compete this year to legitimately win it all.  The Hardy tag IMO will always be justified in coming back up.  Why?  Let him walk or trade him.  Start building around your QB and essentially building your O.  All starts with the OL

I'm not necessarily talking about FA's. We knew going into the year we were on thin ice at tackle. At minimum, especially when G. Williams went down, we should have at least kept a couple of prospects on the PS to give them some time practicing with the team.

It honestly looks like their plan was just to throw bodies out there for this season and hope for the best.

We had one, but Seattle nabbed him, IIRC.

Again, it goes back to Hurney IMO.  He knew that Gross was on his last legs, I mean you can only play for so long, and he skipped a day 1 starter at T to draft Amini.  Pretty dumb move that most anyone could have seen coming.

As for the plan....it's to get Marty Magic's crap off the books, then build a contender around Cam.

Gotta look a little deeper.

CJ is very very expensive, and after this season can easily be cut for some serious cap savings.  His contract, age, and current production don't look good for him in a Panthers uni after this season.

DG knew that Hardy had a screw loose, and decided to give him another year to see if he could keep his nose clean to give him a long term deal.  In the long run, the tag may help us, it's just hurting this season.

You just don't let one of the best pass rushers walk away, however his off field actions may make us do just that.

Agree.  How many of us are really surprised that the o-line has been 'offensive' this year?  I don't get paid millions to run an NFL team, but as a fan I could clearly see the o-line being the biggest weakness the Panthers had this year.....even before the 1st game.  I never understood the Hardy tag either....not because he wasn't worth the money but because it was reported that the Panthers never intended to sign him to a long-term deal.  I think $15M could have helped secure a few o-lineman but what do I know.

OT was never the priority it should have been for this front office and coaching staff. now we are stuck.

this team lacks balance. it's too focused on defense. i don't care how good you think your defense is or how much you think that focusing mostly on D is going to keep you in games, sometimes that defense is going to fail, and this season weve seen it fail a lot.

you have to have an offense that can come back from behind. gettleman and rivera thought that if they threw enough money ane picks at the D, it would be enough to keep us competitive. good in theory, but the results are what you see.

we overspent on defense this year and used that as an excuse for not doing anything aside drafting an OG and adding to our collection of udfas we foolishly think should be enough to protect the QB.

they screwed the pooch and they have to know this. they made colossal errors in judgment that many of us saw. why didn't they see it? was it that they were too locked into their philosophy to objectively look at and handle the looming situation?

oh well...what's done is done and now we have to deal with a really bad OT who even with a few games experience facing 34 defenses managed to consistently suck being replaced for at least one game by a player from canada with no experience facing 34 defenses.

i don't care that the saints suck at their 34 D. this is the type matchup a struggling defense looks for to build a little confidence in.

i would like to thin that gettleman and co will learn from their mistakes that investing too much money into one side...scratch that...one position only hamstrings your team and sets you up for failure.

i would like to think that, but i don't. i see them out to try and prove a point that you don't have to invest heavily in an OT...that all it takes is finding the right udfa. fox/hurney believed that in regards to QB until panic without education made hurney jump the gun with clausen.

fortunately we stumbled on cam, only now we have a braintrust that can't figure out how to manage the OL properly when there's just so many shiny DLmen put there that they have to have.

got a struggling OL? draft OGs and pick through the udfa scrap heap to find some big guy you can plug in there since the only thing that really matters is being big and you don't have to coach big.

got a struggling secondary? draft a few guys late, but pick up and start these old guys who are slower than a slug in molasses.
