Sounds like you need a pretty serious workstation...  maybe look refurbished?  We got my son a refurbished Apple laptop and it did pretty well for about 3 years until the monitor on it died.

 

I'm not familiar with Thunderbolt drives at all... 8GB is $1500???  That's insane.  I realize that Thunderbolt has fast transfer speed but I can get two 4TB eSata drives for around $350.

 

Looking on Newegg... I see some Thunderbolt high capacity drives for a good bit cheaper than that...

It's magical if you stick with a payment plan.  I used citi card to pay for my honeymoon ($14k) and then I just made monthly payments for 18 months.  After paying for the wedding, I had no money and with this option I was able to go to Maui for 2 weeks for my hneymoon.

uncompressed full resolution 4K needs at least 20Gb/s... so I doubt it

Surprised that your employer doesn't provide it or reimburse for the purchase.

Can you get a tax deduction for it?  That would save you a little money.
