Would you favor going West Coast?

Cam's accuracy is perfectly fine for WCO.  And let's face it, our WR corps isn't set up for years to come.  We have ONE wide receiver whose job should be secure for next year.  We've been retooling our WR corps since Moose left.  Get a speedy guy (or hell, let Philly try to fill the role) in the next draft and it's all good.  It's not like "WCO" receivers and "Coryell" receivers are different shape blocks trying to fit in each other's spots (I avoided using the word holes for obvious reasons, on this board).  WRs of different archetypes can fit different roles, look at Smitty.  He didn't fit the #1, throw a fade route to him in the end zone build.  But he did it.  I think WAY too much is made of "we don't have the guys for that system."  Guys can learn a system.  It's not like 3-4/4-3, where the difference is MUCH larger.  Like the other guy said, I don't care what system we run, as long as the guy running it is at least a decent OC.

We've had that discussion before, I know.

We looked at Pat Shurmur as an OC candidate this past offseason and he's now getting some head coach buzz again.  What's your take on that?

I actually referenced Pat Shurmur just the other day on a Dave Gettleman thread.  He does have ties to Gettleman through Spagnuolo although it's the 2nd degree of separation.  I wouldn't be surprised.

As a side note I wouldn't completely blame what happened in Cleveland on him.  Colt McCoy actually had his best year as a pro under Shurmur.  If he was the GM/ HC then it would be a huge red flag.  I'm still not sure if I'd want Shurmur as HC, but you can't deny his success at OC.

Personally, I prefer the Coryell system.  I will say this though... I do not like Shula's "twist" on the system at all.  I think it takes 80% of it's effectiveness away.  By that I mean, he still runs everything too bunched up.  Coryell thrives when the offense is spread out, and we don't do that nearly enough.  Not enough motion, not enough spread, not enough "dump" options, not enough.... Coryell.

Shula runs an Erdhart-Perkins.  Similar to Coryell in aspects but it's an E-P.  The same he's run most of his career.  The playbook is so bland, you'll mistaken it for Coryell but that's a big misconception around these parts.

I thought about it, but then just said 'nah'.  I'd suggest people look it up if they don't know.

If it helps, I mean Bill Walsh style West Coast vs traditional Air Coryell.

Teeray brought up Earhardt-Perkins.  i wasn't going that route either

That's technically what we run.  You see it the most in uptempo mode.  We use a power run complimented by a diverse but simple passing sets but without the really quick passes.  It's just Shula's (and Davidson for that matter) constructed their playbook a hybrid between Coryell and E-P.  And they're bland as crap.

I had friends at Bama when I was at Auburn during the Tubberville era and they would always talk about how he was a guy who couldn't actually implement the offense he was trying to implement.  The more E-P side of our playbook actually comes out when Anderson comes in.  Watch for that when/if it happens again.

I think more so last year than this year.  This year it looks more like a straight Coryell.

I know we ran an Earhardt-Perkins system under Jeff Davidson.

Yeah that's true.  I think where we break away is the lack of any true downfield runners and a rather bland running playbook.  This is in part due to our OT situation because we just can't manage to run effective counters, misdirections, or screens.

I'm intrigued by what's happened with the Ravens.  Harbaugh groomed Flacco in a Coryell and with Kubiak there, it's been a very interesting blend going on as they transition to a WCO.  It's still for years why I'm drawn to what Dennison & Kubiak have achieved.  It has cut Torrey Smith's production but there's still a decent dose of downfield passing (We witnessed this haha)

Here's his playbook for the Broncos in 2004:

Now Cam is not a short passing QB so I don't know if this is a fit, but I like it as an offense.  That's what I've seen from the Ravens and really like it.

Two other offenses that has some interesting things going on are the Chargers and Colts.  McCoy and Pep Hamilton are doing some interesting things with their Eardhart-Perkins systems.  Something in that mold may be the best fit for Cam in my opinion.

    • The SEC were not having GT upset Georgia at home. Horrendously corrupt officiating in this game - the non-PI on 4th down and the non-targeting call on the King fumble. Good lord.
    • I like how they were about to punt the ball right before the two minute warning before being like... oh fug, this'll be too obvious we gotta try a FG then ole boy skulls one that never got more than about 12 feet off the ground. LOL!
