i'm pretty new to charlotte.  the other day i was really wanting some good pizza but wasn't sure where to order from.  i don't like reading reviews on yelp and would rather try for myself.  i ended up going with hawthorne's on 7th.  i got a large pepperoni and mushroom and an order of garlic knots.  i give it about a 6/10.  what places would you guys recommend around here?  not sure if any of you have been to sticks and stones in greensboro, but that is my favorite pizza joint.  used to live a few houses down and would walk there about 2-3 times a week for food or beer.

also, that frito pizza looks bad, real bad.

Charlotte and Pizza, I'm really at a loss thinking of spots.  Mellow Mushroom was decent back in the day.  Not sure now.  The only place I really enjoyed was Fuel for just za.

FWIW, just go to Lupie's (not pizza) and thank me later.

edit - duh Brixx was always pretty good.  I guess it depends on your style preference and chain vs. hole in the wall...

edit2 - this is way back in the day and not sure they're still open but Louisa's brick oven pizza was awesome.  It's behind Park Road SC.

well that's one thing that I remember from the last time I had it... maybe like 6 or more years ago... and the bland dough... the overly greasy bland cheese...

if I had to compare it to anything, it would be a stack of paper towels smeared with Ragu sauce and sliced american cheese product melted over top of it with whatever other toppings you ordered that they could corporately purchase from the cheapest source...

and I say this without carrying a bias about the bad experience we had with ordering there the last time we did all those years ago...

I like sweet pasta sauce in general...

But for Mom and Pop stuff, I'll second Luisa's on/near Montford.  She also owns Dolce and is always there.  Love that place, too.

yea i remember Luisa's, thats the one with the corn meal on the bottom?  i did enjoy that, unfortunately my expectations in pizza has changed
