The Shula promotion in 2013

Jackson would have been a threat to take over if Rivera got canned. He wasn't about to let that happen.

The problem with that line of thought is that doesn't help him keep his job. Rivera either keeps his job with a good OC or loses it regardless with Shula.

This was discussed over and over again.

The truth is he was promoted not because he was more talented, but because they did not want to make Cam learn an entirel new offensive system. It was a continuity hire, not a capability hire.

Problem is: They deviated from that 2011 offense anyway.

And Cam has shown a proficiency to learn new offenses, as he'd done for 3 straight season with success. So that really wouldn't have mattered either. Lol

But he would have still got payed sitting home.

Seemed, like a good deal to me. Cause the more he coaches, the more people realize he's not a good coach.

At least sitting him, people could forget. Lol

It is clear that most Huddlers dislike Shula and his lack of innovation when it comes to play calling. Does anyone have any proof that Gettleman or Rivera or even Cam have problems with Shula.

Please dear God let someone say yes.

Not sure if they would say it now or publicly. But they did after Chud was gone.

Realistically, Chud was better!!

It would seem like that's the case, but honestly the offense is not far off from what it was in 2013. We're ranked in the mid 20s in total yards just like last year, our efficiency has gone down only a few spots on football outsiders, the team is still winning the TOP. So it's not like it's not doing the same things it did last year.

The difference is, it doesn't have a great defense to back it up. So in order to win with this slow, uninspiring, uncreative offensive system, we basically require a defense that doesn't give up a first half touchdown in any game and is pretty much the 85 Bears reincarnate.

Now tell me what other team punishes itself with the Sisyphean undertaking of trying to win with a self-limiting formula?

Yep.  And that's exactly why I was worried about him going into this year:

Either way, my original point was that IMO Shula should be in the hot seat.  As you said, maybe this was a down year for him/the offense.  If it wasn't, and this is really the best we can do offensively under him, he shouldn't be brought back.  Because, despite all the ball control efficiency etc., if anything goes wrong with the defense, we're going to struggle to win games.  Put it this way: if 2013 was the real Shula offense, would you be comfortable with that and a not top 10 defense?

Remember over the summer when it seemed insane that we might not have a top 10 defense though? Those were the days...
