Offseason Strategy

We still have Cam under contract for one more year and we are trying to carry over quite a bit of free money into next year to help with the salary cap. What Moves do you think we do in order to field a more competitive team? Who do we go after in free agency? Who do we cut?

If I were to guess I'd say we do something like this:

Extend Cam possibly keeping his cap hit the same next year as it would if he didn't take the extension. It's around $15 Million I think. If he does that, he can take more money in the years following, but if he takes a team friendly deal, we're gold.

Cut/pay cut for Charles Johnson. We can do something more team friendly with him next year and we know it. This will free up some cap room for the free agents/Cam

June first cut Deangelo Williams. It's time. It was fun while it lasted, but it's been time for a while now.

Re-sign Dwan Edwards on another short term kind of deal. He's a solid backup at this point.

Re-sign Byron Bell to a back-up worthy contract. He sucks. I won't argue that, but he has starter experience and is familiar with the other linemen on the team. He'd be a decent back-up.

Who do we go after in free agency?

Jake Long, Michael Roos, or any other fat guy that can play OT at a halfway decent level. Not sure who else will be available either from cuts or who might be worth a look at, but I do know that we need an upgrade at this position badly on either side of the line.

Kick the tires on CJ Spiller to see if he wants to come back to the carolinas. He's getting up in age and has injury concerns, so we might be able to get a team friendly 2 or 3 year deal with him.

Draft:

I see us going either OT, DB, WR, and LB in the first 3 rounds. I would not be surprised if we pick up another athletic LB that could possibly start day one or we could groom for the post TD era of the team.

Any other contractual moves with the current roster/ FA options you guys foresee available? Who do you want us to sign?

Our main focus this offseason s/b fixing this awful OL. If Sunday's game is any indication, we will be selecting 10-20 in the upcoming draft. We need to find a top-tier LT here. If there's none available (highly doubtful), then Todd Gurley would be an ideal fit. With Josh Norman stepping up, Benwiekere getting healthy and the other young DBs getting a year of experience, our secondary unit may not be a critical as we thought. Use the 2-4 rounds for another WR, OL or CB and later rounds for depth in said areas. With FA we should focus on find stop gaps/short term fixes at RT or DB.

It's too early for this. Can we at least wait until after the Saints game to think about the offseason. At least we will have a good indication on where we will stand.

I don't think it's too early to tell that we need a new line and more help in the secondary. I'm interested to see who would be available/worth taking a flyer on.

Definitely OT both sides of the ball.   One has to be a free agent.  If we are lucky to grab a solid one in the first round I doubt we would be able to match the miracle and get other in 2 or 3.  Beyond 3 you might as well work with what you got.  None of those will be ready to start.

Secondary help and if a speedster WR was available I would grab him.

Keep adding the best talent available after that.

Don't be surprised if the name Shaq Thompson from Washington starts becoming a dark horse in Panthers mocks depending on where we pick. Athletic LB who started at S but has transitioned into a two way star at LB/RB for the Huskies.
