Rivera's contract was just extended last year

Couple of things...

- Pretty sure we don't know how much of Rivera's contract is actually guaranteed.

- Richardson fired Dom Capers just two years into a ten year extension. That's more than twice what Rivera has left.

- The way most head coaching contracts work, any guaranteed money he did have would only be guaranteed till someone else hired him, and Rivera would likely have another DC job within short order.

- Perhaps most pertinent, he loses a lot more money keeping a losing coach in place than he would replacing Rivera.

Jerry Richardson knows he's not gonna live forever. He wants to see his team win a Super Bowl before he's gone. Do you really believe he's just gonna sit back and let his team be run into the ground if he sees that happening?

(the people who actually know him will probably have a different answer than the internet only crowd)

Thanks to the PSL system, JR wont be hurting for profits, EVER. So I doubt that has any bearing on his decision making when it comes to firing Rivera or not.

And he doesn't have to sit back and watch his product on the field run into the ground, he's already done it. We have five winning seasons in twenty... and he's still rich.

I'm not saying he doesn't want to win, but if the goal is profitability, then he has no goal to work towards. He already accomplishes that at the start of each season. He also leads the culture of continuity over competition that has plagues our franchise for its existence. I also believe because of his belief in that culture, he is delusional in not realizing that when that is the overriding factor in building a roster, you aren't going to win consistently.

I love JR for bringing us a team, but he is at the root of why we have never maintained success or built a consistent winner.

You seriously don't believe a winning team generates more revenue than a losing team?

Lol, of course it does, but he makes money a lot of other owners struggle to make on the front end. So, the need isn't pressing to make it on the back end. I'm not saying it's a conscious decision, but it lends itself to complacency.

The only thing that's really going to get JR's attention is when it hits his wallet. When people stop showing up and paying $50 or $60 bucks in food/beer and stop buying jerseys and other memorabilia, he will begin to notice. A bad season could easily cost JR more in lost revenues from sales/marketing than paying off Rivera to go away.

But if you agree that 1) he wants to win and 2) he wants to make more money - and all this acknowledging that he knows his time left on earth is short - then where's the incentive to just sit back and do nothing?
