Its in the Feet

Great post and photos, Jeremy.

Totally agree with your points as well. When Cam first came into the league, his footwork was awful and led to inconsistent play. He's worked hard to correct it, but has to revert to poor mechanics because pressure is in his face or blindside damn near every play. This FO has to address the oline situation through FA and the draft, or Cam will never progress to the next level.

I worry that Rivera and his staff are either flat out incompetent or simply incapable of developing Newton and maximizing his obvious talents. Instead they simply take his abilities for granted and just use them to compensate for our inadequacies in other areas of the roster.

He would an alien if the o-line lack of protection wouldn't influence him. It's tragic to see that Bell can't muster an average outing and that the front office thought that he could be good enough.

But to be fair, all the first round drafted tackles from past three years look awful too, let all alone the later ones. They tried to sign the Bengals LT, but he choose Bucs. Next offseason should be finding a LT and RT because Bell and Chandler are abysmal.

Every QB has mechanical breakdowns from time to time. Best ways to ensure proper mechanics: Get a QB that wants to be great and will put in the work (Got That). And provide weapons and and OLINE that gives opportunity mechanics to happen properly (DON'T GOT THAT).

Cam shows he can have picture perfect technique when he is absolutely sure he won't be hit.

You could make the same statement about virtually every quarterback in the league.

Christian Ponder would be a Pro Bowler if he were absolutely sure he would not be hit.

In the NFL, the average sack takes 3.8 seconds. And that number is skewed somewhat by the many sacks that take over 5 seconds. A great many sacks happen in under 3 seconds.

Pocket presence and movement in the pocket are the key. Several of the QB's who are tearing up the league this year are under just as much duress as Newton. Seriously. Sometimes just stepping up or moving slightly to one side is the difference in a 2 second sack or having 3.8 seconds which is plenty of time to throw. The good ones buy just a little time with subtle movement.

When Cam does start to move, it is usually not an attempt to buy time as much as it is a decision to take off down field.

Constant pressure is just part of the game these days. With the restriction on defensive backfield play, pressure is the key to good defense and bad defense. Every QB in the league right now would be tearing it up on a constant basis if he was continually afforded great protection.

I see Cam try to set his feet then get obliterated for a sack a lot.  I'll be honest though, it takes him a LONG time to make his reads sometimes.  He needs to get better and knowing where his outlet/checkdown passes are.  And if that's not already a focus of Mike Shula, then that's more reason he should be fired with an offensive line that's as bad as the Panthers.
