Troubling comment from Rivera

According to Zod, Rivera said "he doesn't know why Olsen wasn't more involved in the game plan". I find that one of the most disturbing comments from this head coach in a while. I see some head coaches on the sidelines actually calling plays and this guy is the complete opposite. So Shula is devising game plans while Rivera has zero input and no interest? There is something wrong with that picture. Does he not sit in on the offensive meetings at all? Not to know what the game plan will be on BOTH sides of the ball is absurd. I am not sure about his management skills anymore.

There is a difference between being a head coach and a coordinator.

The reason why most HC's fail?....They haven't figured this aspect out.

When you're a coordinator you're responsible for one thing; whatever that is.

When  you're the HC, you're the CEO; thus are responsible for everything (including PR, and media relations)!!

Question is,what was the actual question?

Can't read much into that quote outside of the already frustration of u fans.

That's it, that statement just summed up all the problems. Got a coach that don't know poo about a offense and Shula got full control of the offensive game plan and the offense line up. That's why the gameplay is the same every game and never have any adjustments. That's explains why Rivera always put so much on the defense and only trust the defense. Both needs to be replaced.

I also loved how during half time, he complained "we need to get into the endzone when have the opportunity; that's unacceptable (as if it was all on the players)", while the play calling sucks.

Hopefully, he's mad at Shula, and will fire him soon before Ron Ron gets fired.

Rivera talks to defensive players sometimes, but he doesn't seem very involved with the players on Sundays.  I'm watching the Packers/Saints game right now and you frequently see Sean Payton making calls, talking to Brees, heavily involved in the gameplan for the offense.  McCarthy is the same on the other side, actively involved in the gameplan.  Rivera is a defensive coach, granted, but you don't see that kind of involvement from him on either side of the ball during the game.

So I'm not surprised he had no idea why Greg Olsen wasn't more involved.  He seems pretty removed from it all during the game.

Well he probably doesn't know and probably won't until he looks at the tape.

It could have been schematic by defense to take Olsen out of the game and make others beat them.

Could have been he was open but Cam didn't find him.

Could have been nature of route combinations.

Maybe Olsen wasn't getting open because his ankle was hurting him.

Who knows. Sometimes asking a coach "why" something happened right after the game is a stupid question

I'd like to think a head coach could figure most of those things out during the game. You know, so he can make adjustments.

If that statement is true he needs to go.

Yup, one game, no idea what's going on, you're fired. Rivera obviously draws up the gameplan, and what he meant was that the gameplan involved Olsen so he has no idea why Shula was unable to make adjustments to get him open.

You prep all week, and stick to it.

Yes you prep all week but a great coach can change a game plan on a simple timeout. A great coach game plan is to change the game plan at halftime most of the time to be one step ahead of the opposing side. Having one game plan is asking for failure.

Problem is, I think he trusts Shula. Rivera doesn't have a hot clue how to run an offense so he believes if what Shula is doing isn't working, he'll find execution flaws in the play rather than seeing the big picture

He doesn't have to know how to run an offense. He's a coordinator, he should know when somethings working or not. Problem is; he's not a good executive, thus does nothing!!

Just watched his press conference, something even more troubling stuck out to me:

When asked about the play of Bell and Chandler, it was basically "well, they did the best they could."

Unfortunately, Ron, their best isn't getting it done and is probably the second biggest reason behind Shula we have now dipped under .500. This isn't peewee football. This is the National Football League. "Best they could" just shouldn't cut it at this level. Something has to be done. Bring in competition, trade for a young tackle with upside. Bring in a veteran that has declined. There has to be upgrades elsewhere that can be had at a relatively affordable price.

How to fix the Offense:

1-draft / acquire better OLine talent

2- draft / acquire some speed for the slot

3- draft / acquire a second TE who can make plays

4- draw up plays designed to let our WRs have some YAC. Every route we run its a catch and tackle. You watch other prolific offenses...they get their guys in space and make easy throws and watch em run. Why can't we do that?

Do these things so we can quit asking cam to carry the entire offense every single week. It's not possible in this league.

Agreed but the thing that is the most troubling to me, is that we have the same needs that we had last off-season and it is apparent already. I thought for sure we would doing everything we could to surround Cam with talent and protection by way of the draft and free agency. Instead, we drafted and equal amount of defenders to offensive players and used our free agency period on the secondary that hasn't performed well either. Sure, we brought in Avant and Cotchery, but I would have passed on those contracts to couple that money with other funds to bring in a competent tackle. Losing Gross was still the biggest blow to this team. I bet Gettleman regrets not taking a crack at an OT in the draft after witnessing the product on the field right now.
