Reasons why Shula is no longer needed in Carolina...

This is on Rivera and whoever else made the decision to promote Shula.  I remember people were mad/frustrated about it here but a lot of us gave him the benefit of the doubt given the talent on the offense we thought he had to work with.  He's no different than he was in TB or Alabama.

And I won't forget how off the Rivera train everyone was before the winning streak and we're heading back to that territory.   If we can turn things around, Shula still needs to go.  Depending on how we finish Ron's seat should gain some heat as well.

The biggest problem is that these observations have been getting made for the last 3 seasons.  I watch every game and I usually know before the snap if we are going to throw or run and I'm just a random nobody.  You have to imagine opposing defenses are equally tuned in to whats about to happen.  Whats so frustrating is when we mix things up and pass out of a running formation, or vise versa, it seems like we typically have success.  Think about how successful we have been in the hurry up during the limited times we've seen it this year, yet we absolutely never ever do it unless we have no choice.

Seems like an offensive coordinators job is to call a game that keeps the defense off guard and that just isn't happening in these parts.

Completely agree. We shouldn't be able to call what is going to happen. Those screens and fake screen-screens have completely lost their novelty. Defenses see those from a mile away.

I've always said this since we have Cam: there is waaay too much shot-gun and not enough play action. Also, those fake handoffs before every pass out of shotgun are more detrimental that beneficial.

The biggest question is, why does the team keep Shula around?  We're rapidly approaching completely hopeless (a Win Thursday COULD be a shot in the arm that we need) wreck.  Things have got to turn around from a planning and calling perspective.

This is where the team needs to continue to talk about being held accountable for your product....

Rivera's players seem to like him and he seems to let whomever the OC is, totally have their way, whether is a creative nut like Chud or a conservative simpleton like Shula.

This says to me, we're a decent OC away from having a decent coaching staff. If we put a lot of resources into our offense with a decent OC, Rivera and McDermott could keep the D competitive.

The reports of the lackadaisical training camp and preseason still concern me in regard to Rivera and my well documented "Norv Turner effect" theory, though.

Well have you ever considered that we have a ton of dead money on guys who are no longer playing here and we put most of the money on the defense compared to the offense. Most the money on offense is in the RBs. Just look at how we spend money on the offense we basically only have Cam, KB, and Olsen and last year we just had Cam and Olsen. We got a bargain bin OL and bargain bin WRs. My expectations for this group is average to below average. It is not Shula's fault for the lack of talent. Shula has been solid last season and this season given the players he is given.

Shula, is that you?

His safety valve was the sideline. Or the dirt. All he had to do is throw it away. Sure, lots of things went wrong on that play but in the end it was a boneheaded play by Cam.

And god forbid Cam ever be allowed a bonehead play.

Cam, as we all know, MUST be perfect. He isn't allowed any mistakes.

Let's start at the top:

1) Richardson hires a guy as the HC that everyone has passed over tons of times.  Maybe because he's cheap?  I think because for some reason Richardson enjoys conservative coaching even though we're in a high octane offense league.  He basically hires a cheaper John Fox.   We are just behind the times in the league and it shows, every game.  Richardson brings in Gettleman last year, not a bad hire initially.

2) Gettleman says our offensive line is fine this year, starting a undrafted Byron Bell who was horrible as RT.  Moving him to LT apparently will make him a viable starter immediately?   We basically do nothing in FA to upgrade our line after losing Gross/Wharton.   We basically have one of, if not, the worst line in football because it's filled with scrubs.  Gettleman/Rivera also feel confident in the secondary, because they took a chance on their line still being dominant, they signed an aging, super slow Ron Harper that no one else would have, and a has-been in Decoud.  It burnt them.

3) Rivera continues to be a terrible game-day coach.  Clock management issues, challenge issues, refusing to change with the game and even the league.  He allows Shula to keep calling terrible plays and our offensive game plan is from like 20 years ago.   He reverts to conservative Ron and won't go for it in OT vs the Bengals, despite our defense not stopping them at all the entire game.

4) Shula, just a bad offensive coordinator that probably wouldn't be hired anywhere else.  It was a safe pick by Ron that took no creative thinking.  We're outclassed each game because the NFL is no longer a conservative thing, you have to score points, and a good bit.  He either calls an OK play call or a TERRIBLE one, you get no middle ground here.  First post in this thread sums it up completely.

In short, EVERYONE from Shula up is to blame.  There is a common denominator, because it could be Rivera, or John Fox, our teams always play the same, a good game and them lose it in the end because we play not to lose.  This is Richardson, he keeps hiring the same coach, and seems to enjoy the outcomes.  I don't understand it, but it's the only thing that makes sense.

Players and QBs, will make mistakes, but when your coaches and management aren't giving them a proper chance or an offensive line, what can you expect?

You sir have nailed it right on the head. Somebody should send this to the Carolina Panthers front office. Everything you stated is exactly what's wrong with this team.
